Mon Cheval may fly under the radar (or Gallop – Mon Cheval translates to 'My Horse'), but they are consistently putting out some excellent wines to the market, and definitely a winery worthy of your attention. They are in a fortunate enough position where they are able to hold back wines from release, if they believe the wine needs time for it to show best, such is the case with this wine.
2015 was an excellent vintage in North Canterbury and made wines with concentration and longevity, so the decision was made to hold this back until the time was right – and that time is now!
We couldn't be happier with how this is drinking currently. The wine is just starting to develop sought after secondary characters such as forest floor, mushroom, and truffle, along with savoury undertones like dried herbs, but still retaining a lovely juicy freshness and now perfectly integrated tannins.
With all the ageing done for you, here is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a perfectly aged North Canterbury Pinot at a very attractive price for a wine with 10 years of age.
Winery notes (2015 Vintage)
"This is the second release of the Mon Petit Cheval label – this wine is the younger brother to the Mon Cheval range, exhibiting the same refined aromatic and textural complexities, but with a gentler and more fruit-forward profile. Packed full of red fruit and spice aromas, with hints of anise, florals and a stalky herbaceous influence, it’s generous on the palate with firm tannins and medium-plus acidity supporting a solid finish."
