Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2019
After many years producing a string of highly awarded Pinot Noir at Central Otago's Akarua winery Matt Connell took the leap to go it alone and produce his own label. This has been rewarded with his previous release 2017 Rendition Pinot Noir winning the very top award at last year's NZIWS, the Trophy for Champion Wine of the Show.
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"Rendition is a blend of Central Otago vineyards and subregions. My quintessential Central Otago Pinot Noir, my Rendition of a given vintage. The 2018 Rendition Cuvee is blended from ultra premium fruit sourced from Lowburn and Bendigo vineyards.
The 2018 Rendition showcases a new label by New Zealand Street Artist Component. This artwork was spray painted on board. Component’s design highlights the various elements of my favourite things; the Central Otago landscape, Southern Alps, vivid sky, vineyards, people and colours that evolve over a given season.
2018 shows beautiful aromatics with chocolate and spice whilst the palate has an ethereal quality that is lighter but at the same time balanced and powerful by its understated nature.
Hand harvested fruit was 100% destemmed to tank. A 5-day cold soak then took place to build colour and intensity of flavour. The must was inoculated with both wild yeast and cultures selected for their ability to add complexity. Fermentation lasted 15 days with peak temperatures reaching 31 degrees. A Post fermentation maceration period of 4 days followed which allowed tannins to build structure and balance. The decision was then made to press off the skins to tank. Following settling in tank the wine was racked to French barriques of which 25% were new. The wine then underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel and matured for ten months in oak before being racked, blended and bottled on March the 8th, 2019."
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2019 (2018 Vintage)
"Gorgeously fruited and immensely appealing, the bouquet shows dark cherry, sweet plum, vanilla, thyme and toasted hazelnut characters with nuances of spice and floral. The palate delivers excellent weight and depth, while remaining elegant and refined with silky mouthfeel and polished tannins. Youthfully charming and graceful with potential to develop greater complexity and richness. At its best: now to 2026."
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, August 2019 (2018 Vintage)
"A blend of fruit from Bendigo and Lowburn. Dense, ripe juicy plum and red rose with subtle chocolate/mocha and liquorice characters. The wine has a lush, sumptuous texture. Delicious now but no rush."
