Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2024
Matawhero is one of Gisborne's pioneer wineries, now operated by the Searle Family. The grapes are grown on the iconic Briant vineyard in the Patutahi region just across the river from Matawhero where Chenin Blanc seems to thrive. We just love the spicy, honeysuckle flavours and freshness on the wine. Enjoy with or without food.
Winery notes (2024 Vintage)
"This gorgeous French variety grows well in our Gisborne climate. Aromas of citrus blossom, floral and orange zest notes. The palate shows lime, stone fruit and honeysuckle flavours with nice acidity and a creamy texture.
The grapes for this wine were sourced from the Briant's vineyard in the Patutahi region just across the river from Matawhero. The Chenin Blanc grapes are grown on Kaiti clay soil and with the vines being young, we only had two canes laid down for the growing season. This resulted in low yields and ensured early ripening with nice ripe flavours."
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2024 (2024 Vintage)
"A gorgeous rendition of the variety, the fragrant bouquet shows Gala apple, pineapple, melon and lemon peel aromas, followed by a succulent palate that's bright and lively. Beautifully textured and elegantly structured, it's superbly long on the finish with delectable flavours. At its best: now to 2031."
Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, July 2024 (2024 Vintage)
"Very youthful, fresh, bright and lifted bouquet. Aromas and flavours of baked apple and white peach, there’s a decent back bone of acidity here accentuating the use of lees adding to the mouthfeel and richness on the palate. Plenty of weight and purity of fruit on display. A wine that will work as an aperitif style or with starter dishes, leading us and you nicely into summer 2025, and beyond. Best drinking from day of purchase through 2029+"
