Winestate (Australia) Pinot Gris of the Year 2018

Like all the other Main Divide wines, this over delivers on the flavour, quality and value fronts to offer excellent drinking at a fantastic price. Lusciously off dry with a richness, concentration of flavour, and complexity that could only come from Pegasus Bay. Aromas and flavours of ripe pear and spice, judicious residual sugar, added texture from barrel fermentation and lees aging, and a mineral freshness keeping it all in balance are rare attributes in a Pinot Gris at this price. Embrace and enjoy!

Winery notes (2016 Vintage)
"Warm and settled weather in North Canterbury during December provided optimal conditions for flowering. A perfect summer, followed by a warm dry autumn enabled the subsequent grapes to be picked with excellent flavour development and physiological ripeness.

On the nose there are pronounced aromas of stone fruit, lychees and pear drops, underpinned with honeysuckle and tropical spices. It is full-bodied, concentrated and unctuous in the mouth with a tangy hint of root ginger. The earlier picked fruit adds freshness and satisfying acidity, while the noble botrytis and lees ageing have increased the mouth feel and complexity of this wine."

Winestate Pinot Gris of the Year 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Full of personality, this is a gently botrytis influenced, medium style, drinking well now. Bright yellow, with a slightly honeyed fragrance, it is weighty, with concentrated, well-ripened peach and apricot flavours, spicy, honeyed notes and a rich, slightly sweet, very harmonious finish".

4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2016 Vintage)
"From Pegasus Bay, this is consistently a great buy. Full of personality, the 2016 vintage is a gently botrytis-influenced, medium style, drinking well now. Bright yellow, with a slightly honeyed fragrance, it is weighty, with concentrated, well-ripened peach and apricot flavours, spicy, honeyed notes, and a rich, slightly sweet, very harmonious finish."

5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, October 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"A gorgeous rich style, the generously expressed bouquet shows apple tart, poached pear, spice and potpourri aromas with a hint of flinty complexity. The palate is succulent and beautifully weighted, displaying wonderfully rounded mouthfeel, backed by subtle sweetness and refreshing acidity. Mouthfilling and highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2020."

4 Stars & 17.5+/20 Raymond Chan, October 2018 (2016 Vintage)
"Bright, light golden yellow with some depth, paler on the rim. The nose is rounded with a concentrated core of ripe yellow stonefruits along with notes of honeysuckle, exotic yellow florals, musk and minerals. The aromatics possess depth and grow in volume in the glass. Medium-dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has a fulsome core with rounded and deep flavours of ripe yellow stonefruits and honeysuckle, with subtle notes of exotic florals and a musky overlay. Spice notes emerge, and the palate is underlined by some power and drive. The mouthfeel is soft and rounded, the acidity in the background, and the wine carries to an unctuous finish. This is a fulsome and flavoursome medium-dry Pinot Gris with ripe stonefruit, honey, floral and musk unfolding spice and some alcoholic power. Fruit harvested in stages in April, with a latter portion including some botrytis, and fermented in stainless-steel to 13.0% alc. and 9.65 g/L RS, the wine aged on lees."
