Brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston founded Laphroaig (pronounced la-FROYG) in 1815 on the south coast of Islay, after initially rearing cattle there. Its whisky is known for its peaty, smoky character. The distillery is said to take its name from the location, which means ‘broad hollow by the bay.’ Laphroaig remained in family hands until the mid 1950s.
Drinks Biz Magazine, June 2019
"This is the original Laphroaig, distilled the same way for more than 70 years and the foundation of all other Laphroaig expressions. Malted barley dried over a peat fire gives this whisky its rich aromas of peat, which continue on the bold, smoky palate along with a hint of seaweed and a subtle sweetness. Fullbodied with a long finish."
