Winery notes (2025 Vintage)
"Kottabos is a Greek drinking game of the highest skill – where after many glasses of wine one elegantly flings the leftover lees from naturally unfiltered wine toward predetermined targets in the room with fellow drinking friends. The relaxed nature of the game by performing its skillful task while still seated at the communal dining table made for great fodder. Kottabos in the case of this wine is a small side project from Reenen Borman of Boschkloof. Here he experiments with other grapes not grown on the estate farm, but still within the Polkadraai Hills, and also presses the boundaries a bit more with more adventurous winemaking techniques.
Perfumed, vibrant, and incredibly inviting, this Rhône-inspired blend bursts with aromas of red berries, crushed cherries, and beautiful floral hints of violet and lavender. On the palate, juicy flavours of raspberry and red plum are elevated by an earthy dusting of white pepper and indigenous fynbos. It is a lighter-bodied, beautifully textured wine with a fresh, focused acidity and fine, powdery tannins that lead to an elegant, highly drinkable finish.
Crafted by acclaimed winemaker Reenen Borman from vineyards rooted in the decomposed granite soils of the Polkadraai Hills, this wine highlights a thoughtful, minimal-intervention approach. The Grenache component (which makes up the majority of the blend) is 100% whole-bunch fermented in open-top picking bins to enhance freshness and spice, while the Syrah is traditionally destemmed to add backbone and structure. After fermentation, the Grenache is matured in concrete to preserve its vibrant, pure fruit profile, while the Syrah rests in older French oak barrels. The components are later blended and bottled with minimal filtration to capture the honest expression of the vintage."

"78% Grenache, 22% Syrah. The former is 100% whole-bunch fermented and matured in concrete, the latter destemmed and matured in older oak. Highly expressive aromatics of red berries, pomegranate, orange, fynbos, floral perfume and pepper. The palate is vivid and fruit-driven, with snappy acidity and powdery tannins. An absolute blast to drink. ."
