Year in year out, The Lodge Hill shiraz provides excellent drinking and throw in exceptional vintage conditions in 2021 and you've got the makings a very smart wine. Made in a refined style, with savoury, spicy characters that complement red berry aromas and flavours. Succulent, fine-grained tannins add structure and complexity. Overall, just an extremely delicious wine that hits all the right spots, as it has obviously done with wine judges all around Australia!
Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"A pastoral run dating back to 1839, and originally named Wolta Wolta, the 329 acre Lodge Hill Vineyard is situated on the Eastern Ranges, five kilometres east of the Clare township. Jim Barry purchased the land for The Lodge Hill Vineyard in 1977 as he was sure it would “produce some of the best Riesling in the Clare Valley.” However in 1979, Jim Barry planted his first Shiraz in this location, and it has gone on to produce our award winning Lodge Hill Shiraz.
Perfectly ripe black plum and forest berry compote, with hints of pepper, spice, and a touch of sweet-cured meat on the nose. The palate is coiled and purposeful on entry and feels like it wants to explode. With a satin flow, a bright core of berry fruits and hints of spicy oak, this a very moreish wine."
96/100 & Number 2 – Ray Jordan Top 100 Reds 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"Consistent, reliable, and in some cases, outstanding. This is in the outstanding category. The key to this remarkable wine is the high-altitude vineyard in Clare Valley, which provides fruit of such elegance and flavour intensity. This wine is as good as any that has been released from the time the vineyard was planted in 1977. Perfumed fruit and an elegant medium bodied palate create a perfectly tuned wine."
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, October 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"Upfront and enticing, the wine shows black/blueberry, rich floral, assorted nut and warm spice aromas on the nose. The palate is equally appealing with excellent weight and succulent fruit intensity, finishing long and flavoursome. At its best: now to 2033."
4 ½ Stars & Top 10 Cuisine Australian Shiraz Tasting, June 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"Youthful and rich with an appealing colour and wonderful dark fruit lift on the nose. The palate is dark and intense with purple fruit flavours alongside thyme and subtle florals. A generous wine with soft round tannins that have just the right amount of grip."
92+/100 Cameron Douglas MS, October 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"Fabulous bouquet and palate with flavours of sweet ripe blackcurrant berries, fresh dark skinned plums, violets and dark roses, clay soils and scents of new wood with clove and baking spices. Youthful, fruity, fleshy textures and finishing dry, a wine with a core of fruit surrounded by fine easy tannins and plenty of acidity. Food friendly and ready to drink from 2023 through 2028+."
91/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review (2021 Vintage)
"Dense, inky shiraz with chocolate/mocha, liquorice, Christmas cake, dark berry and subtle, spicy oak flavours. Big, almost syrupy red that is surprisingly drinkable now, but no rush."
90/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, December 2022 (2021 Vintage)
"Good value, juicy Shiraz here…Black cherry, dried raspberry, nuts and toffee, with some toasty coconut oak. It’s medium to full-bodied, full of sweet cherry and spiced oak flavour, some praline too, with silty fine grained tannin, oak kind of obvious, yet cuddly and assuring, and a nutty and sweet red fruited finish of solid length. Yeah. it plays to the crowd, but that’s ok by me."
