James Halliday's 2020 Winery of the Year

Cover Drive has long been one of our most popular Australian Cabernets and at this deal price, it is certainly one of the best value. This Coonawarra and Clare Valley blend is deep, full and coming out swinging, it really has got it covered!

Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"On the southern boundary of Coonawarra is the old Penola cricket ground, which first saw a ball bowled in anger and the flashing cover drives of the local champions of 1950. The cricket ground was retired in 1996. The following year, Jim Barry was fortunate to purchase the 30-acre property which he then planted with Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cover Drive Cabernet Sauvignon, first released in 2001, has been inspired by the great cricketing history of this vineyard. The wines consistently show great line and length.

The nose leads with aromas of fresh tobacco leaf, cassis, boysenberry and spice. A silk like entry on the palate with super fine, detailed tannin, ripe berried fruits, a hint of tobacco and the classic brambles of Clare Cabernet to finish."

94/100, Ray Jordan Top 100 Reds 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"This wine is a combination of the elegance of Coonawarra, with the substance of the Clare Valley, making it a terrific expression of these two regions. There is intense dark chocolate and blackcurrant on the nose, with the palate revealing rich dark plum and blackcurrant, supported by a thread of chalky tannins and oak. A classy wine."

5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, April 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"This is immediately inviting on the nose with blackcurrant, dark plum, green olive and toasted almond notes. The palate is equally attractive with excellent fruit intensity combined with spicy nuances, finishing sturdy and fruity. At its best: now to 2031."

Joelle Thomson, drinksbiz Magazine August/September 2024
"This is one of Australia's most iconic Cabernet Sauvignons, with dark mocha aromas, a hint of capsicum suggestive of Cabernet and a dark, powerful, structured style. Drinks well now and can hold, developing touches of further complexity for the next three to four years."

Jim Barry Wines, a name synonymous with excellence in the Australian wine industry, is deeply rooted in the Clare Valley and Coonawarra regions. With a philosophy centred on vineyard ownership, the Barry family ensures that the quality of their wines begins in the vineyard. By meticulously managing 17 vineyards in the Clare Valley and two in the Coonawarra, they produce grapes of exceptional quality, leading to wines of unparalleled flavour and character.

The Armagh Vineyard, known for its Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec, yields small-berried, intensely flavoured grapes. Meanwhile, the Florita Vineyard is famed for its Riesling, offering a blend of historical significance and rich, concentrated flavours. The Lodge Hill Vineyard's unique soil profiles provide the ideal environment for low-yielding vines, producing wines with intense flavours and fine structure. Additionally, the Old Penola Cricket Ground Vineyard in Coonawarra contributes to their lineup with its Terra Rossa soil, perfect for crafting premium Cabernet Sauvignon.

These vineyards form the foundation of Jim Barry Wines, where each bottle reflects the dedication to quality and tradition that defines the Barry family’s winemaking legacy.
