Andy and Jill Black farm 700ha of family owned land. Their personal interest and focus on wine led them to plant their first vines in 2005. In the past they have supplied grapes to well known labels. Now recently they have decided to produce their own wine.
Isolated Hill is a 1.2ha vineyard on a perfect North facing slope in Waiau, North Canterbury. The nutrient rich limestone clay soil is similar to the terroir of Burgundy, the original home of Pinot Noir. Sitting beneath a working limestone quarry this wine is an expression of the many characters from its site.
Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"Planted on the north facing slopes once walked by the mighty Moa, Isolated Hill Vineyards vibrant and complex wines. The wines attain their distinctive quality from the inverted soils caused by historic earthquakes that left basalt soil atop of calcareous limestone clays."
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, December 2021 (2020 Vintage)
"Beautifully fruited and composed, showing dark cherry, thyme, roasted nut and warm mushroom aromas, it's succulent and supple in the mouth delivering soothing texture and fine polished tannins. Harmonious, complex and engaging with a persistent elegant finish. At its best: now to 2026."
