GLAETZER BISHOP SHIRAZ 2023

A Shiraz from vines up 120 years old in the famed Ebenezer sub district in the northern Barossa Valley. This stunner is exactly what Aussie master Ben Glaetzer is known for — Shiraz that is hedonistic and yet also polished.

"Glaetzer Bishop is a true expression of Barossa Shiraz that is elegantly structured with a long finish. Bishop is the family name of Colin's wife' Judith. Fittingly the sign of Venus, a symbol which has come to represent women and feminine energy, is the centrepiece of the Bishop label. In mythology, the symbol meant the Roman goddess Venus or her Greek equivalent Aphrodite. But the sign has also been linked back to ancient Egypt – a nod to Bishop’s link to Amon-Ra and Anaperenna.

Exceptional old vine fruit was sourced from the famed Ebenezer sub district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley. Vine age 35—120 years old. Yield 3 tonnes per hectare. Fermented in 1 and 2 tonne open fermenters. Extended maceration was employed to enable good tannin development so the wine is soft and approachable early. Matured for 16 months in a mix of 40% new oak and 60% 2— 3 year old oak hogshead barrels (100% French).

Subtle yet generous with black cherries and dried spice. Another expressive and approachable vintage for Bishop. It is both structured and layered and enjoys a smooth and supple texture. Flavours of black cherry, raspberry, olive and black pepper are supported by balancing tannin. It is mouth-filling and persistent on the finish. Great drinking now but this wine will also benefit from up to 10 – 15 years of careful cellaring."

"This is a highly distinctive Shiraz from the Ebenezer sub-region of the Northern Barossa Valley. The vines are between 35 and 120 years old, so once again, as with these Glaetzer wines, some serious, deeply intense fruit has gone into the wine. The aroma is intense, with plum and blackberry combinations working alongside a little spicy pepperiness and a faint ironstone character. The palate retains energy and vibrancy with deeper, darker fruits, a little dollop of chocolate emerging before carrying through to a very long finish. You’re getting a serious bang for your buck with a wine like this, which can cellar for up to 15 years and won’t cost the earth."

"Cracking Shiraz from the Ebenezer sub-region in the Barossa Valley, the vines which provided the fruit ranged in age between 35 and 120 years of age. The grapes underwent an extended maceration before maturation for sixteen months in French oak, 40% new and the remaining 60% two- to three-year-old hogsheads. Deep maroon with a blood red rim, the nose offers notes of plums, chocolate, hints of smoked meats, root vegetables and blackberries, with subtle oak integration. There is a slight dusting of cocoa powder as well. The wine exhibits good focus through to fine powdery tannins and the balance is never out of kilter. The palate sees the emergence of more chocolate notes. A lovely style which will provide pleasure for the next ten to twelve years."

"Sweet fruit flavour is delivered ripe and ready. Redcurrant and plum flavours balloon through the palate, bringing clove and mint characters along for the ride. It’s not complex but there’s a lot of flavour here."
