Our annual allocation of Felton Road releases has just landed, and the wines are looking spectacularly good. Expert winemaker Blair Walters has this to say about the current releases…
"The below wines (along with the previously released 2024’s) are as fine as anything we have ever made. You’ll often hear us say this – usually every two or three vintages – and it’s not just because they’re the latest we have to sell! It’s only natural as our vines get older, combined with our ever-increasing knowledge and experience, that the wines’ potential pinnacle gets higher and higher. Sure, you need the right set of weather conditions throughout the growing season, but how we interpret and apply our accumulated knowledge plays a significant part."
Winery notes (2024 Vintage)
"A little shy on first reveal, but then the deeply bound fruit and complexing aromatics begin to unfold. Powerful, deep and saturating – what we have come to expect from MacMuir. The unmistakeable Felton Road winemaking hand contains the package allowing it to gradually deliver, exposing layer upon layer. The site is special – a hedonistic wine that’s brooding, formidable and unique.
The unique gravity flow winery enabled the grapes to be gently destemmed directly into open-top fermenters without pumping, retaining 30% as whole clusters. Traditional fermentation with a moderately long maceration on skins has extracted good colour and tannin with considerable depth of flavour. This wine was aged for 13 months in 20% new French oak barrels from artisan Burgundian coopers. In accordance with our non-interventionalist approach to winemaking, this wine was fermented with indigenous yeast and malolactic, and was not fined or filtered."
Reviews for the 2023 vintage below…
Rated Outstanding & 97/100 Cameron Douglas MS, November 2024 (2023 Vintage)
"I really do feel that these Pinot Noir vines love the soil they grow in, there’s a lovely core of fruit and sense of site, the bouquet is alluring, new and vibrant. Scents of dark berries and baking spices, clay and dry earth, some dark roses and black cherry. A very taut frame as the wine touches the palate, tannins are ripe and in abundance, acidity brings in mouthfeel and freshness, flavours and salinity. A delicious and complex wine with a quiver and vibrato, it just needs cellar time with best drinking from 2030 through 2040+."
94/100 Erin Larkin, RobertParker.com, February 2025 (2023 Vintage)
"The 2023 MacMuir Pinot Noir leads with cocoa powder and pomegranate, dried herbs and caper brine. The palate offers all of this and more, framed by fine, chalky tannins and a wash of juicy acidity that feels watercolor-like and impressionist in the mouth. I like this wine very much, and the slightly lighter frame this year works well for it. It is chewy and good, with asphalt and petrichor through the finish."
93/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, October 2024 (2023 Vintage)
"Sage and stuffing, cherry and raspberry, kind of minty and squishy in red fruit and cherry, a dusty and grainy grip to tannin, quite some ripe orange tang to acidity, bacon and smoked things, with a finish of good length. Nice wine. Bacon bones is a thing here, but lots of character too."
