Top 12 Gimblett Gravels 2022 Annual Vintage Selection by Andrew Caillard MW
Every year Australian Master of Wine Andrew Caillard MW is invited to the Gimblett Gravels to select his 12 favourite wines of the vintage. Remarkably, this $18.99 red blend from Esk Valley has been rightfully included alongside wines such as Craggy Range Le Sol ($180) and Church Road Tom ($220).
And if that's not enough to convince you on the quality on offer here, it has also received rave reviews from other top reviewers around the world including The Real Review, Wine Advocate and Decanter.
Made by legendary winemaker, Gordon Russell this 39% Malbec, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Merlot red blend was fermented in open top concrete fermenters before being pressed to (30% new) 225l French Barriques to mature for 20 months. The end result, one spectacular bottle of wine that well and truly offers insane value. Drink now and any time over the next 10+ years.
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"From the deep stony soils of the Gimblett Gravels, this Malbec based red was fermented in open top concrete fermenters and hand plunged. Deeply coloured and complex with jammy and plummy notes.
This is a very deeply coloured wine as you would expect from a Malbec based wine. It displays rich plummy, jammy Gimblett Gravels fruit on the nose with hints of tobacco and dried herbs. On the palate it is a medley of power and concentration from Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon allied with softer Merlot tannins."
96/100 Andrew Caillard MW (2022 Vintage)
"… Generously concentrated wine with abundant cassis, blackberry fruits, chinotto/ cola notes, fine chocolatey/ chalky textures, superb inky density and attractive underlying marzipan vanilla notes, Lovely volume, richness and vigour. Drink 2026 – 2036."
5 Stars & 96/100 Huon Hooke, The Real Review, March 2025 (2022 Vintage)
"Deep and bright purple red colour; very attractive sweet blackberry/cassis aromas, with a background of dusty oak and the merest hint of tomato bush. Big, bold and profound in flavour, with great length of carry and ample fine-grained, powdery tannins providing firm but not tough backbone, lovely poise and finish. Great structure and will age superbly."
94/100 Erin Larkin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, January 2025 (2022 Vintage)
"The 2022 Artisanal Collection Malbec Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot is supple, floral and mid-weight, with a profusion of red and purple berry fruits and shaped by spicy, savoury tannins that feel both chewy and very finely milled. This is an elegant wine that speaks of place, and it's blessed with a penetratingly intense flavour profile. Recommended."
93/100 Emma Jenkins MW, Decanter UK, September 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Rich in brambly berries and cassis, iodine and violets, sandalwood and cigar box. Youthful and vibrant with an invitingly supple palate, fine tannins and a juicy, clean and bright finish. Not as intense or complex as some, but at a fraction of the price, this will make very nice drinking indeed while the others mature. 39% Malbec, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot. 18 months in French oak, 40% new."
Rated Excellent 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, March 2025 (2022 Vintage)
"Great colour concentration leading to a bouquet of ripe dark red berry fruits, blackberry and roasted plums, a mix of sweet and bitter chocolate, cacao and baking spices. The wood smoke from use of barrel adds complexity and depth. Dry with an abundance of ripe tannins and plenty of acidity for bite and freshness, Well made, lengthy and delicious with best drinking from day of purchase through 2030."
92/100 The Wine Writer (2022 Vintage)
"Ripe cherry and dark plum combine with earthy tones and violet florals. The palate delivers vibrant, concentrated fruit, both generous and fresh, with a subtle herbal edge. Light, dusty tannins provide structure, leading to a lingering finish of clove, toasted oak, and black fruit. Bold, fruity and balanced with layers of complexity that will continue to evolve."
