Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"This is a single vineyard wine from the Two Terraces Vineyard situated inland at Mangatahi. The Chenin Blanc plantings are located on the lower of the two gravel river terraces formed by the Ngaruroro River.
This wine reveals classic Chenin Blanc notes of baked apple, peach, citrus and honey. It is dry in style with a full and rich palate, enhanced by long term ageing on yeast lees. It is delicious as a young wine but will gain complexity with time in the bottle and will make the perfect accompaniment to seafood dishes. 7.7 g/L RS."
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, February 2022 (2021 Vintage)
"Splendidly styled and expressed with ripe apple, apricot, subtle spice and rich floral aromas, it's succulent and fleshy in the mouth offering excellent fruit intensity backed by bright acidity, finishing lingering and mouth-watering. At its best: now to 2027."

"The instantly likeable 2021 vintage was harvested from young vines, grown inland at Mangatahi, and fermented in tanks and large oak barrels. Full-bodied, with generous, peachy, slightly spicy flavours, a distinct touch of complexity, and an off-dry finish, it shows lovely balance and vibrancy. Drink now or cellar."
91/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review (2021 Vintage)
"Intensely fruity chenin blanc with pineapple, apple and a hint of honey flavours supported by taut yet juicy acidity. Very accessible now but should develop well with bottle age, at least in the medium-term."

Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, May 2021 (2020 Vintage)
"Pure fruited bouquet with scents of green apple and lees textures, crumbled stones with a light flinty edge and white blossoms. Equally pure fruits with flavours of apple and lemon, a touch of pith then mineral and lees attributes that reflect the bouquet. Pristine polished acid line, a white flower and mineral quality and a long refreshing finish. Beautifully made, balanced and ready to drink from 2021 through 2026+."

"One of the things winemaker Gordon Russell knows about chenin blanc, is that if you give it an inch, it’ll take a mile. You’ve got to keep it semi-starved and its vigour in check in order to produce these gorgeous apple and honeysuckle-centric flavours. It’s spiritual home is the Loire Valley in France and it’s rarely seen in NZ, however Esk have been making chenin blanc for a very long time, capturing fresh-baked apple, creamy, caramelised notes, masses of mineral-edged aromatics perfectly. It’s richly structured and superb with creamy, savoury foods, so I’m thinking smoked fish pie for sure."
