Dicey is the Central Otago brand of the Dicey brothers. Father Robin and sons James and Matt have had an integral involvement in many aspects of Central Otago wine since the early 1990's. The family were founding partners in Mt Difficulty with Matt being the winemaker since its inception in 1996 until now and James viticulturalist for many well known Central Otago wineries. They know their stuff!

Winery notes (2024 Vintage)
"Nose — Blackberry. Blackcurrant. Violet.
Palate — Juicy. Vibrant. Lively.

Fruit harvested from The Inlet vineyard mid-season, in excellent condition. The majority of the ferment was destemmed with 25% left as whole bunch. 19 days on skins, hand punched down daily. Indigenous yeast, natural malolactic fermentation in barrel. 10 months in neutral oak. Bottled and unfined and unfiltered."

Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, September 2025 (2024 Vintage)
"A purple and ruby core with pink rim leads to a bouquet of bright, fresh, plump and varietal scents of red currants and black cherry, a stony hard earth mineral quality and a layer of gentle whole berry fleshiness and lift. A dry wine on the palate with a medium- weight, a backbone of acidity and fine polished tannins adding texture not grip. Well made, fresh and delightful, a wine to enjoy through Spring and Summer, chilled or not, with food or not. Best drinking from 2025 through 2027+"

Dicey wines are a true reflection of the rugged landscape of Bannockburn in Central Otago. The region’s extreme climate—with its hoar frosts, blistering heat, and bitter cold—shapes the character of the wines produced. Grapes are sourced from three distinct vineyards, each owned by pioneering families spanning two generations. Each vineyard has a unique essence, influenced by its harsh, unforgiving soil and climate. The Dicey team harvests these grapes by hand, crafting single-vineyard wines that capture the spirit of their origins.

Every bottle of Dicey wine tells the annual story of Bannockburn’s vineyards, with a focus on the nuanced variations of each vintage. Selected barrels are chosen to create a blend that serves as an ode to the year—a bottled time capsule of the region. This dedication to place, family, and the land itself is at the heart of Dicey’s philosophy, making their wines a testament to both struggle and reward in an extraordinary winemaking journey.
