A ripe and vibrant old vine Tempranillo is from a fastidious producer who also happens to be a legend. Organically grown, this wine always brings a sweet-fruited richness that can be tempting to call 'hedonistic,' although it seems misleading for a wine that is also so supple and bright.
Rated by Tim Atkin MW as one of the 'First Growth' Estates of Ribera del Duero. Alongside such icons as Vega Sicilia and Dominio de Pingus. The Callejo family owns 60 hectares of low yielding Tempranillo vines (Tinto Fino as it is known in Ribera del Duero) ranging in age from 25-70 years. Felix Callejo uses grapes from its Estate only. The grapes are carefully selected and hand picked into small cases of 30 pounds. Carried in small quantities, there is no danger of having the grape skins break and sparking an undesired premature fermentation. The crates are taken directly to the winery, where they go through two selection tables, the second one selecting grape by grape and discarding any imperfect grapes.

“Majuelo is a traditional Castilian word used by our grandparents to refer to small vineyards always on marginal, poor land. From here comes the idea of making this wine, from a selection of pure Tinto Fino grown in three vineyards between 870-890m. These are marginal and very poor gravel soils, with very low yields, achieving a perfect balance giving very fine and elegant wines, with a long journey in time. Aged 18 months in 500L fûts. This wine transported us to our childhood, when all the grandchildren helped our grandmother Daría."

"A bouquet of blackberry preserves, mocha and purple flowers leads the way for raspberry, pomegranate, chocolate-covered caramel, mint tea and fennel pollen flavours. Opulent tannins and dazzling acidity wander into a long-lasting finish."

"This is made from a selection of three parcels of old head-pruned vines planted at high altitude in alluvial soils. Lots of cedar, blackcurrants, asphalt and smoke. The palate is full-bodied but remains vibrant, structured but very well constructed, with significant yet polished tannins and a well-delineated finish. Better from 2026."
