We all know and love Astrolabe's Sauvignon Blanc but when they turn their hand to other varieties, the result is equally as impressive. This is a beautiful summer Riesling, as in it can take a good chilling, it sits at the drier end of the scale and has lovely long flavours.
Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"The Farm is my own vineyard, situated in Grovetown, in the lower Wairau Valley. The vines at The Farm are some of our oldest. We dry farm, practise organics and are moving towards organic certification. The old vines in the riesling block are a mix of three different clones. Nowadays, riesling is not so widely planted in Marlborough, but it is perhaps one of the varieties best suited to Marlborough’s cool climate.
A mixture of hand-picked and machine-harvested grapes were fermented with light solids to produce an aromatic, dry wine with attractive citrus and floral flavours. Only the free-run juice was used to preserve fruit clarity and a tight acid structure. I think riesling presents one of the best cellaring wines of all, especially in the screwcap closure, and I expect this wine to age gracefully for many years.
Care was taken to avoid phenolic extraction, with half the grapes hand picked and whole cluster pressed and only free run juice used in the winemaking. A cool fermentation in stainless steel, with light grape solids retained and an aromatic yeast strain, has resulted in a tightly structured and aromatic wine.
Aromas of lemon honey and lemon zest, green apple and citrus blossom. A light-textured, mineral wine with fresh apple and lemon flavours and a crisp, racy acidity."
Number 1, Top 10 Riesling Tasting, David Walker Bell, WineFolio.co.nz (2020 Vintage)
"Crisp perfume with bags of citrus, but also honey, pear, green herbs, nectarine and rose petal. Subtle and wispy, with a lightness of touch as it flits across the palate. A dry style, but feels generous and juicy – possibly due to the saline acidity that is flinty and salivating. Wines that ‘change’ as you savour them are hard to meet, and worth savouring when you do. This one takes you on a journey through every sip – complex, layered and enigmatic. A worthy winner."
Rated Outstanding & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, April 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"Immediately enticing bouquet of lime and lemon, white flowers and white fleshed peach. On the palate – just dry with a whisper of residual sweetness which is hardly noticeable with the core of citrus and stone fruit flavours, acidity and mineral flint-like flavours. Very crisp and refreshing with a salivating saline effect leading to a dry finish. Delicious and drinkable from today with ideal drinking from 2024 through 2040."
