Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"Sweet scented with peach, lemon and hints of tropical pineapple, layered with complex notes of coconut, honied nuts and baked fruits. The palate has wonderful concentration with tropical and stonefruit flavours on a backbone of rich oak spice and vibrant citrus acidity giving generous length.

The fruit for this wine is a blend of Mendoza (42%), Clone 548 (24%), Clone 15 (21%) and Clone 95 (12%) grown on the sandy silt soils of the lower terrace of the Askerne vineyard. Hand-picked and whole bunch pressed, the juice was transferred to barrel for fermentation. The barrels were a mixture of both wild and inoculated ferments and completed 100% malolactic post ferment. The wine was subsequently aged for 10 months with lees stirring to add volume and complexity. The final blend has a 29% new French oak component, and 15% 2nd fill."

"Distinctive, youthful and intriguing bouquet with scents of fuzzy peach skin, grapefruit pith and ripe red apple. There’s a mix of smoky wood scents and lees adding a spice quality. Overall youthful and enticing. A dry wine with a satin touch on the palate, fuller-bodied with a youthful firm texture accentuated by the acid line. Flavours of stone and citrus fruit reflect the bouquet. A wine with tension from the structure cushioned by the core fruit flavours. Balanced, well made and ready to drink from day of purchase through 2027."

Founded by John and Kathryn Loughlin in 1993, Askerne Estate winery has enjoyed steady growth. Their dedication to vineyard expansion and cultivation of various grape varieties has been met with success, despite challenges such as frost and inclement weather.

The winery marked its 25th anniversary in 2018, introducing new wine styles and engaging customers with a unique gourmet picnic concept. The recent addition of winemaker Cairn Coghill has further bolstered the expertise of the team.

The 2021 vintage proved exceptional for Askerne, with a remarkable collection of gold medals and accolades. Notably, their cellar door was acknowledged as the best of the year.
