DOMAINE THOMSON MERCUREY EZ CHENÊS 2021

Domaine Thomson was the vision of David Hall-Jones and his wife PM (short for Pui Mun) and encompasses the wine operations in the northern and southern hemispheres.

In 2000 they established a 14 ha vineyard at Lowburn, Central Otago. They also owned a property in Burgundy and in 2013 became the first New Zealanders to own a vineyard in Burgundy.

Today the original vision holds firm. PM and her family continue the path she and David began together — one vision, across two hemispheres — crafting wine that reflects the nuances of the terroir and the diversity of the vineyards.

Made by Armand Heitz. This is from the estate’s 0.317-ha parcel of old vines, planted in 1964. The lieu-dit gets its name (Chênes) from the band of oak trees at the top of the parcel. Notably, this has 100% whole bunches and unlike the Bourgogne AOC wines, which age for 8 months in barrel, this aged for 14 months.

"Beautiful garnet colour. The first notes are raspberries, followed by a hint of mushrooms and forest floor. The wine is finely structured, supple and succulent, with fine tannins, a delicious core of red fruit, and a long, racy finish."
