A domain of very high standards, Yann Chave (and before him, his father Bernard Chave) has lived for years in the shadow of the more famous Chave domaine run by Jean-Louis. Since he took over in 1996, Yann has lifted the reputation of the estate considerably by making fine examples of both red and white Crozes-Hermitage as well as some fantastic red Hermitage. Yann uses some very meticulous vineyard practices based on organic and sustainable viticulture principles.
Today, Yann owns 17 hectares of vines in the Northern Rhone. The vines are dispersed into two appellations. They have 15.5 hectares in Crozes Hermitage and 1.5 hectares of vines in the Hermitage appellation. All of Yann’s wines speak clearly of where they come from, yet contain a pure, sweet fruit which will win many new fans.
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"On the Chassis terraces, the former Rhône river bed has deposited a layer of river pebbles, marking the identity of the terroir and emblematic of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. Chave's Syrah has been growing here happily for over 50 years. For Le Rouvre, selected plots where the grapes produce deep, perfectly velvety tannins, for a wine with a marked identity and optimal ageing qualities.
An open, aromatic, rich nose of fresh blackcurrant, a hint of pepper and some licorice. There's a sensation of freshness defined by a touch of menthol. A fresh entry on the palate. The mid-palate development is generous and structured, built on dense, velvety tannins. Aromas of ripe black fruit, spices and a few floral notes give this wine a beautiful radiance. The finish is marked by a touch of freshness and lovely length. Full-bodied, fleshy and voluminous."
92/100 Matt Walls, Decanter, September 2023 (2022 Vintage)
"Suave, soft, ripe blackberry and blackcurrant. Supple and ripe tannin. Does have a good sense of balance and drinkability, plus a long finish. One of the better 2022 Crozes."

93-95/100 Josh Raynolds, Vinous, May 2020 (2019 Vintage)
"Highly perfumed aromas of fresh cherry and dark berries, candied flowers, exotic spices and incense. Juicy and seamless in texture, offering bitter cherry, black raspberry and spicecake flavours that show fine definition and become sweeter as the wine opens up. Finishes on a resonating floral note, displaying formidable tenacity, intertwined tannins and strongly persistent spiciness. This might turn out to be the best version of this bottling I have ever experienced."
