From the Menzies vineyard and named after the Coonawarra region’s cigar-shaped strip of red terra rossa soil. Inky dark in colour the flavours run deep in this wine, with cassis and mocha. This is quite simply, a great Coonawarra Cabernet from an excellent producer.
Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"The Cigar is a name coined by Coonawarra Vignerons to describe the region’s unique cigar-shaped strip of rich red terra rossa soil. Home to some of Australia’s most famous vineyards, the secret of Coonawarra lies in the intimate bond between the terra rossa soil, limestone layers, pure artisan water and a long, cool ripening season. Fortunate to be part of this iconic place, Yalumba salutes the region’s pioneers and those privileged to inherit its future.
The Menzies Vineyard, Yalumba’s premium Cabernet Sauvignon estate, was established in the world-famous region of Coonawarra in 1975. The terroir is defined by red brown earth over limestone, perfect for growing grapes for full-bodied, structured red wine.
Deep crimson in colour, medium to full depth in hue. The bouquet shows blackcurrant and mulberry fruit aromas, supported by savoury cedar oak with hints of mocha. A vibrant palate of violets and mulberries balanced by notes of chocolate and blackcurrant. The finish is long and lingering with powdery tannins. Matured for 17 months in 18% new French oak barriques and hogsheads, balance in one year and older French oak barriques and hogsheads."
Rated Excellent & 94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, March 2026 (2023 Vintage)
"Excellent colour and core intensity with a bouquet of roasted plums and blackberry, cacao and baking spice, a whisp-of-mint, wood smoke and boot polish. Delicious on the palate with all scents reflected as flavours framed by an abundance of sine tannins and an acid line that delivers freshness and some power, concentration and style. Well made with best drinking from 2026 through 2031+."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2026 (2023 Vintage)
"Complex and inviting, the bouquet shows blackcurrant, tobacco, game, fennel, and cedar characters, followed by a weighty palate that's succulent and supple. Splendidly structured by layers of fine tannins, making it sturdy and persistent with delectable flavours. At its best: now to 2035."
