Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2025
The 2023 Wirra Wirra Catapult Shiraz has certainly hit the quality mark and is one of the better releases we've seen from the label. From across McLaren Vale, the sub regions include Seaview, McLaren Flat, Blewitt Springs and The Range. Aged in a combination of French (70%) and American oak (30%) barriques & hogsheads of which 20% is new oak.
Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"The late Greg Trott saw many of his unusual dreams realised at Wirra Wirra. Yet one vision eluded him – to build a medieval siege machine, or trebuchet. Why? To use as a catapult to bomb neighbouring wineries with bottles of wine of course. This wine is part of a range, the RGT collection which remembers the pioneering spirit of Richard Gregory Trott.
Lovely fresh plum and raspberries with notes of cinnamon, cocoa, clove, cardamom, nutmeg and dried ginger. A warm, vibrant and inviting nose. A delicious offering of blueberries, raspberries and plums are layered with pâtisserie-like notes of baking pastry, vanilla bean, butter biscuit and spice. The palate is generous with flavour and supplies an ample measure of tannin that is smooth and fine, with mouth coating persistence.
Approximately 70% French and 30% American. A combination of new and seasoned oak is used, blending to about 20% new oak in the final wine."
93/100 Ned Goodwin MW, JamesSuckling.com, March 2024 (2023 Vintage)
"A generous, full bodied shiraz. Defined by exuberant aromas of lilacs, iodine and purple fruit set in relief against a deftly hewn tannic structure with hints of licorice and a ripple of maritime freshness. Pepper and clove notes grown in intensity as the tannins compress and release flavour in incremental bursts. A warmer climatic expression with a complex cool aura. From organically grown grapes."
91/100 Stuart Knox, The Real Review, January 2026 (2023 Vintage)
"Rich ruby with a full purple line at the rim. Mulberry and mocha aromatics. Dense and powerful but doesn’t overbear the palate. Ripe blue fruits, dusty earth and mocha notes are all in harmony. Tannins are quite gravelly, ensuring there’s a contrasting tension to the fruit’s generosity. Flows long and finishes with a bone-dry crunch. A lot of bang for buck and will offer cellaring rewards."
