The 2022 Wirra Wirra Catapult Shiraz has certainly hit the quality mark and is one of the better releases we've seen from the label. From across McLaren Vale, the sub regions include Seaview, McLaren Flat, Blewitt Springs and The Range. Aged in a combination of French (70%) and American oak (30%) barriques & hogsheads of which 20% is new oak.
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"The late Greg Trott saw many of his unusual dreams realised at Wirra Wirra. Yet one vision eluded him – to build a medieval siege machine, or trebuchet. Why? To use as a catapult to bomb neighbouring wineries with bottles of wine of course. This wine is part of a range, the RGT collection which remembers the pioneering spirit of Richard Gregory Trott.
Lovely fresh plum and raspberries with notes of cinnamon, cocoa, clove, cardamom, nutmeg and dried ginger. A warm, vibrant and inviting nose. A delicious offering of blueberries, raspberries and plums are layered with pâtisserie-like notes of baking pastry, vanilla bean, butter biscuit and spice. The palate is generous with flavour and supplies an ample measure of tannin that is smooth and fine, with mouth coating persistence.
Approximately 70% French and 30% American. A combination of new and seasoned oak is used, blending to about 20% new oak in the final wine."
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, February 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Wonderfully ripe and enticing, the wine shows black/blueberry, spicy oak, cinnamon and rich floral characters on the nose, followed by a concentrated palate offering richness as well as firm structure. Bold and sturdy, yet velvety and comforting. At its best: now to 2036."

"Sourced largely from the foothills of the Vale, in and around Willunga, Blewitt Springs and Aldinga. No new oak, allowing notes of blueberries, dried purple flowers and anise to spread long and broad across the full-bodied palate. Another excellent value from a winery on the rise. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
91/100 Julie Sheppard, Decanter UK, March 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"The name is a reference to the full-sized medieval siege machine built at the winery – a whim of the late Greg Trott, who resurrected Wirra Wirra in the 1960s. Fruit is sourced from the foothills of McLaren Vale and spends 12 months in used French oak. Elegant floral blueberry aromas lead to a juicy palate of blackberries, blueberry and raspberry, with whispers of savoury spice and ripe tannins, all balanced by super freshness."
