Gold Medal – McLaren Vale Wine Show 2023
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"The beautiful region of McLaren Vale is bounded by the Gulf to the West and the various ranges to the East and North. Geologically one of the most diverse regions on earth, it has long been the home to some of Australia’s finest expressions of Shiraz.
Our fruit comes from the Moray Park vineyard in the McLaren Flat sub region. Picked on the way up to retain vibrancy and energy. Winemaking is simple with The Cunning Plan. Take perfectly balanced fruit, pick, gently crush to preserve whole berries and allow to soak for 4 days prior to a wild fermentation. Wild fermented and then pressed to French oak only, with 10% new.
Great depth of ripe plum and blackberry fruit flavours. A full-bodied wine with a succulent palate, lively spices and fine velvety tannins."
95/100 Marcus Ellis, James Halliday’s Wine Companion (2022 Vintage)
"Whole berry, four-day soak, wild ferment, 10% new French oak, the remainder seasoned French. In value terms, this is truly exceptional. It’s a wine of poise and engaging vibrancy that’s also rippling with flavour. Raspberry, blackberry, ripe redcurrant and red plum are all suggested but never so defined that they simplify. A dusting of warm spices and a lilt of red florals deepen the interest as well as the ready appeal. The finish underlines the class, with a lithe, effortless balance that leaves perfectly ripe flavours lingering, along with the desire for another glass. Drink by 2030."
92/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, January 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Blackberry, dark spices, a little dark chocolate mint, some grilled meat. It’s medium to full-bodied, something of a salt crusted beef savoury thing, a pleasing grainy chew to tannin, and a finish of good length, some black olive and nori-like things in the aftertaste. Nicely done. Satisfying Shiraz."
92/100 Cameron Douglas MS, June 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Dark hues of purple and ruby lead to a bouquet and palate of ripe black currant and blue fruit flavours, fine fruit tannins and a finer layer of new wood spices with a touch of smoke. Perfectly balanced and dry, core fruit flavours are persistent as are the spice and some dry stone mineral layers – all leading to a balanced even finish. Best drinking from 2024 through 2029."
