The family owned, organic Wrekin vineyard in Marlborough's Southern Valleys has developed a reputation that rivals the like of Clayvin as being the source of exceptional fruit. Whilst the vineyard name has appeared on several producer labels, the Johns family also produce their own wine with winemaker Hätsch Kalberer (Fromm). Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a small amount of Chenin Blanc is produced.
Dry, mineral, racy and beautifully precise, with green apple at the core and a subtle beeswax and honeycomb character adding depth. There’s lovely flow through the palate, building nicely towards the finish, with a fine phenolic pithiness giving shape and grip. Crisp, clean and seriously lip-smacking.
We rate this as one of the best Chenin Blancs we have tasted from New Zealand.
Winery notes (2024 Vintage)
"Our Chenin Blanc vines are perched on a hillside and include variety of topsoil profiles and aspects. Our Chenin Blanc is dry and floral with a firm fruity brightness. The vines were first pruned by our daughter, Libby – hence the name.
A subtle and delicate nose – green apples & baked quince. Salivating and moreish acidity, dry and long finish. Rich density – bright but firmly grounded. A generous wine with great cellaring potential."
5 Stars & 95/100 Stephen Wong MW, The Real Review, September 2026 (2024 Vintage)
"The organic Wrekin vineyard produces a small amount of wine under its own label, and this is one of those wines (1824 bottles). Made by Hätsch Kalberer, ex-Fromm, it is foot-stomped and basket-pressed to showcase its delicacy and finesse. It has a lovely richness which ensures a long life ahead.
Expressive and detailed with precise, clean flavours of lemon, grapefruit, green apple and anise. The palate possesses very good weight and concentration, balanced by cool, fresh acidity. Some additional complexity emerges on the long finish with cucumber, linseed and wet stone minerality before a tangy note of funk appears briefly. Already accessible now, this classically proportioned and very well-made chenin will easily develop more complexity over the next decade."
93/100 Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, August 2026 (2024 Vintage)
"A mesh of slickness, juiciness, crispness, a kind of sea spray meets lime in mineral water quality, charisma and energy in that. Long and cool in texture, a restraint, yes, again, mineral charged. A little chalky grip, a little puff of talc. A beauty, and quiet complexity is writ large."
