TerraVin is a label that may be familiar to some of you, but as a brand it hasn't been available on the local market for some time. The TerraVin founders were among the pioneers of hillside viticulture in Marlborough, identifying and planting several north-facing slopes that today produce grapes for some of New Zealand’s most highly rated wines.
The owners have decided it is time to wind up the brand, so out to market goes the last of the stock. We looked at a few of the wines but decided this was by far the pick of the bunch, and when we found out the price we bought up as much as we could!
The "Te Ahu" is a complex barrel fermented and aged Sauvignon Blanc that is sits alongside examples such as Dog Point Section 94 ($42.99), Greywacke Wild ($38.99) and Cloudy Bay Te Koko ($74.99). The debut in 2011 was the winner of three trophies at the much respected International Wine Competition and thus a become a celebrated star overnight.
The 2018 is a truly exceptional Sauvignon Blanc that has had the royal treatment; hand harvested, wild fermentation in 500L French oak puncheons and aged in them for up to two years. The resulting wine has an intense nose with densely packed and complex, interwoven aromas of gooseberries, nectarines and subtle smoky-flinty elements, leading to a concentrated palate possessing power and drive. The wine offers immediate enjoyment Now, but will also age beautifully for a few years to come.
Whilst we can't advertise the discount, be assured this wine should never be selling at this price point, but here we are! Grab some before this one-off deal disappears!
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"‘Te Ahu’ is a Maori term that describes a new pathway, a new generation or beginning, reflecting the philosophy of this wine. Through very low yields, intensive vineyard management, hand harvesting, indigenous ferments and ageing in 500L French oak puncheons, Te Ahu fuses beautifully ripe Sauvignon characters with winemaking complexity to produce a truly individual wine."
Rated Outstanding & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, March 2021 (2018 Vintage)
"There’s no mistaking the seductive scents of barrel ferment with aromas of sweet wood and lees, ripe citrus and preserved stone fruits, mineral and spice. On the palate – smooth, silky texture with contrasting acidity and a core of barrel fermented fruit flavours to reflect the bouquet. Packed with intensity and flavour, fine fruit and wood tannins add mouthfeel and length."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, June 2022 (2018 Vintage)
"A gorgeous barrel-fermented expression, the fragrant bouquet shows crunchy apple, gun smoke, citrus peel and dried herb notes, followed by a concentrated palate displaying excellent weight and persistency. Beautifully layered and firmly structured by bright acidity, finishing long and engaging. At its best: now to 2026."
