Vineyard of the Year – New Zealand Organic Wine Awards 2025
Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"Our Chosen Barrels is made in the very best years. Each season, certain parts of our vineyard stand out, capturing our imagination. As we hand-pick the grapes, these notable sections are carefully selected and nurtured through to barrel. From the many barrels, the most exceptional are selected and allowed an additional six months in oak to develop added complexity. These chosen barrels are then blended to create a wine that eloquently reflects both the unique site and the nuances of the season.
The three most outstanding Pinot Noir barrels from the 2020 vintage were selected and left to spend an extra six months in oak before being blended together. We are ultra-fastidious in our Organic Pinot Noir vineyard to ensure the fruit has intense concentration of flavour. This involves careful hand work to moderate crop levels and expose the fruit to the sun.
This 2020 Chosen Barrels Pinot Noir is crafted for remarkable longevity, showcasing complexity and concentration. It displays excellent poise and length, with an elegantly rich and velvety mouthfeel. Upon release it is Lively and succulent, showing cherries, forest berries, wild herbs and some peppercorns. Focused and energetic with a flavourful, persistent finish. Promises a rewarding experience both now and as it continues to evolve."
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, December 2025 (2020 Vintage)
"Gorgeously complex and enticing, the bouquet offers dark berry, cured-meat, bouquet garni, porcini, and toasted-almond characters. The palate displays excellent weight, a soothing mouthfeel, and finely integrated tannins, making it wonderfully structured and harmonious with a persistent, seductive finish. Certified organic. At its best: now to 2032. "
Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, June 2025 (2020 Vintage)
"Burgundy red hues and purple, very bright. Aromas and flavours of mineral earth, black currant and cherry. Layers of wood smoke and baking spices add complexity. A dry wine with a developing complexity as the tannins and acidity find harmony with the fruit intensity and overall power. Well made, lengthy and nicely complex. Best drinking from late 2026 through 2033+."
5 Stars & 19/20 (95) Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Reviews, May 2025 (2020 Vintage)
"Moderately deep ruby-red with a purple hue, lighter on the rim. The nose is enticing, with rich aromas of black raspberry, cherry, sweet floral, vanilla, delicate spice and milk chocolate. Medium-full bodied, aromas of black raspberry and cherry are lifted, intermixing with thyme, liquorice, sage, cinnamon and forest floor. The silky mouthfeel entices and opens up rich herb and spice details. Lively acidity binds and flows with poise and strength to a lengthy, savoury finish. This broody Pinot Noir possesses a black fruit core with balanced, savoury details and finely woven tannins, showing strength and length. Match with lamb rack and roasted duck over the next 8+ years. Fermented to 14% alc."
