Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"A bright deep magenta, Estate Merlot/Cabernets ’22 reveals aromas of ripe blackberry, vibrant black cherry, plum, bay leaf and toasty vanilla. A balanced composition, with layers of concentration, this full-bodied wine shows dark berry fruits on the palate, alongside cocoa powder, earthy undertones and silky, savoury tannins that lead to a long finish. Precise and integrated with succulent fruit, it is immediately drinkable and moreish."

5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, October 2022 (2021 Vintage)
"This is instantly seductive on the nose showing blackcurrant, floral, subtle tobacco and toasted almond characters. The palate has excellent weight and fruit intensity, superbly complemented by spice nuances and finely flowing mouthfeel. Beautifully integrated chalky tannins provide classic structure and length, offering gorgeous drinking. At its best: now to 2033."
94+/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, October 2022 (2021 vintage)
"Pencils, black fruit, black olive, violet, spice. Medium-bodied, ripe tannin, rich, zesty, green and black olive, blue and red fruit. aniseed, crushed berries, such a good wine, so lively and packed with dark berry fruit and saline flavour. Firm grip of tannin on a very long finish. All the things. Impeccable. Hard to imagine a better value, and more serious Bordeaux blend at this price point. Incredible."
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper, February 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"The highly attractive 2021 vintage is a blend of Merlot (49 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (43 per cent) and Cabernet Franc (8 per cent). Estate-grown in the Havelock Hills, the Bridge Pa Triangle, the Gimblett Gravels and the Dartmoor Valley, it was matured for a year in French oak barrels (partly new). Deeply coloured, it is fragrant, fresh and full-bodied, with very generous blackcurrant, plum, herb and spice flavours, gently seasoned with oak, and excellent vigour, structure and depth. Still very youthful, it should be at its best 2025+."
92/100 & Top Value, Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, April 2023 (2021 Vintage)
"Te Mata has raised the bar high with its flagship Coleraine, New Zealand’s most iconic wine. I believe that this wine offers outstanding value. Moderately intense wine with cassis, plum, blackberry, new leather and nutty oak flavours. Impressive wine for an entry-level red that obviously received a boost from a favourable vintage."
