Te Mata describe this as a ‘unique expression of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Modelled on dry white Bordeaux this is a blend of 88% Sauvignon Blanc, 7% Sauvignon Gris and 5% Semillon fermented in a mix of new and seasoned French oak barrels and aged on lees for a further 11 months. The 2022 is something pretty special with perfect balance and structure along with incredible texture and length.
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"Radiating a mesmerizing white-gold hue adorned with shimmering green lights, Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc ’22 bursts with its signature perfume – vibrant concentrated nectarine, grapefruit and lime zest with lemongrass, guava and subtle toast notes. The attack broadens into ripe stone fruit and herbal seasoning, developing remarkable richness across the length of the palate. A balanced weight and crystalline acidity add to the immense fruit concentration and long savoury, saline finish. An embodiment of excellence. Is this the best Cape Crest yet? Certainly, it’s the most complex and complete.
The separate parcels were each destemmed and lightly crushed, then cooled before a brief period of skin contact. Following pressing and cold-settling, they were run to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barrels for fermentation. The resulting wines were aged on lees, with regular stirring, for a further 11 months before bottling in February 2023. Cape Crest ’22 is a blend of 88% sauvignon blanc, 7% sauvignon gris and 5% semillon."

"Expressing precision and clarity, as well as power and complexity, the wine shows crunchy apple, mango, lemon pith and cedar characters on the nose with a hint of oatmeal nuance. The palate delivers terrific weight and persistency, wonderfully complemented by fine flow and saline texture, finishing with a great line and length. A stunning expression, destined to mature magnificently. At its best: 2026 to 2036."
94/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, September 2023 (2022 Vintage)
"Cape gooseberry, guava, cream, spice, cut grass and snow pea. Medium-bodied, grapefruit segments, a little thistle and spice, glossy with a firm cut of juicy acidity and subtle flinty texture, aniseed and perfume, pineapple and creamed rice richness, with a pithy finish of excellent length. It has bite, zest and tang, glide and viscosity, and well, it’s Cape Crest writ large. Excellent."
5 Stars Michael Cooper, February 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"This oak-aged Hawke's Bay label is impressive for its ripely herbal, complex, sustained flavours. Most of the grapes are hand-picked in the company's relatively warm Bullnose Vineyard, inland from Hastings (the rest is grown at Woodthorpe, in the Dartmoor Valley), and the blend includes small proportions of Sémillon (to add longevity) and Sauvignon Gris (which contributes weight and mouthfeel). The wine is fully fermented and lees-aged for eight to eleven months in French oak barriques (partly new). Bright, light lemon/green, the 2022 vintage is still unfolding. Mouthfilling, it is vigorous and savoury, with strong, vibrant, passionfruit/lime flavours, gently seasoned with oak, lively acidity, and a dry, very harmonious, lingering finish. Already delicious, it should be at its best mid-2025+."
93/100 Bob Campbell M, The Real Review, March 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Fermented in 100% French oak with 30% new. Fruit forward wine that gains complexity from a sauvignon blanc blend with semillon and sauvignon gris. Creamy-textured wine with grapefruit and redcurrant flavours against a background of nutty yeast lees and spicy oak."
