We have a very small allocation of the excellent 2020 Bullnose Syrah available.
First planted in 1990, the Bullnose vineyard's old red iron soils produce Te Mata Estate's finest Syrah. The wine is named Bullnose after an early Morris Cowley car, which was nicknamed Bullnose due to its distinctive radiator. The bull emblem that appears on the wine label is drawn from the car’s radiator crest.
Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"A luminous deep magenta, Bullnose Syrah ’20 is immediately floral with fresh raspberry, black-cherry syrup, spiced plums and oriental peonies, all bursting from the glass. There’s cinnamon, nutmeg and earth, with mineral, ripe boysenberry and black berry-fruit on the palate adding presence and sustained, subtle power. Fine-grained tannins carry the palate on and on. Luxurious. Resplendent. Bullnose Syrah’ 20 is our most beautiful Bullnose."
5 Stars & 98/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, January 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"Deep, purple-tinted syrah with a wonderfully fine-grained, perfectly pitched texture. Flavours include cassis, plum, dark berries, anise, black pepper, floral and red rose together with spicy oak. A very impressive wine."
5 Stars & 98/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, February 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"This is brimming with gorgeous aromas of Black Doris plum, violet, warm spice and toasted almond on the nose, leading to a concentrated palate offering rich texture and plush mouthfeel. It’s powerful and imposing while remaining gracious and captivating, beautifully framed by fine grainy tannins, finishing persistent and immensely satisfying. Best: 2024 to 2040."
5 Stars Michael Cooper, June 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"Estate-grown in the Bullnose and Isosceles vineyards, in the Bridge Pa Triangle, and the Hotspur vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels, this classy Hawke's Bay red is hand-picked and matured for 15 to 16 months in French oak barriques (partly new.) Unlike its Estate Vineyards stablemate (below), it is not blended with Viognier, and the vines for the Bullnose label are cropped lower. The very graceful 2020 vintage is a great Bullnose. Dark and highly perfumed, it is full-bodied, with very youthful, beautifully ripe blackcurrant, plum and black pepper flavours, showing impressive freshness and density, a backbone of supple, fine-grained tannins, and a finely poised, long finish. Best drinking 2025+."
Rated Outstanding & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, October 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"A brilliant deep purple hued and polished appearance with a palate filled with minerals of clay and stone, violets and black currants, dark cherry and fleshy baked raspberry fruit, suggestions of milk chocolate before the spices and toasty qualities of new French oak fold in. Tannins are in abundance with a polished texture, acidity carries flavour, intensity, flavour and mouthfeel. A delicious wine, lengthy, dry and complex. Best drinking from late 2023 through 2030."
