If there was ever a wine to be described as having a 'pretty nose' then this is it. Ripe red fruits leap from the glass – raspberry, cranberry, cherry and plum will have your taste buds watering before a little spice and classic Bannockburn wild thyme notes add a layer of interest. Very much in the light-to-medium bodied spectrum of pinot, but certainly not light in complexity, the sheer drinkability here is immense.
Te Kano are a relatively new player on the Central Otago wine scene, but have already made some significant investment into the region – they are really starting to produce some impressive wines!
They have a strong passion for conservation (as well as making delicious wines) and are undergoing some extensive regenerative projects around their Estate vineyards based in Bannockburn, Northburn and Waitaki. Working with organic practices (not yet certified) the care and attention here is obvious and they are definitely a winery to keep an eye on going forward.
Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"We believe in the beauty of connections at Te Kano. Between family and friends, wine and food, grapevines and the soil. Our Estate vineyards are testament to this, with organic practices and an extensive Kōwhai rejuvenation project strengthening the web of ecology and our links with the land we love.
Kin is a deliciously vibrant wine made to enliven any gatherings of family and friends. A dark and brooding Pinot Noir with aromas of black cherry, plum and chocolate. Black cherry, cola and spice follow through on the palate with orange peel nuances and a distinctive dried herb bouquet."
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"Delightfully ripe and immediately enticing, the wine shows dark cherry, game, thyme, toasted almond and fragrant spice aromas on the nose. The palate is equally satisfying with supple texture backed by finely infused tannins, finishing splendidly long and delectable. At its best: now to 2029."
4 Stars Cuisine NZ Pinot Noir Tasting 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"Medium coloured with a hint of fade in the glass. The nose is a medley of summer fruits that present with lovely intensity, making the wine all the more inviting. The palate is well concentrated with bright fruit, fine tannins and a long, soft finish."
92+/100 Cameron Douglas MS, August 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"A lighter weighted wine with a core of pinosity and generosity, flavours of red berries then some plum and raspberry scents. Fine tannins and acidity secure a decent structure ushering in flavours of berries and plum to reflect the bouquet. Balanced and well made, a wine for immediate drinking as well as some ageing potential. Best drinking from day of purchase through 2030+. Or cellar through 2027 then continue drinking."
5 Stars & 93/100 Michael Darby, NZ Wine Writer (2021 Vintage)
"Pale ruby-purple, polished and bright, this wine offers vibrant red and black cherry, strawberry, and raspberry, with hints of mushroom and wet earth. Bone dry and fruit forward, the palate deepens into darker notes of black cherry and blackberry, complemented by lively acidity and fine tannins. The finish is clean and dry, with a linear flow that showcases its balance and finesse. A complex, well-priced Pinot, drinking beautifully now through 2026."
5 Stars & 18.5/20 (93) Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Reviews, August 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"Moderately deep crimson, lighter on the rim. The nose is delicate and pretty, with aromas of cranberry, red cherry and raspberry, along with herbs, sweet floral and subtle spices. Medium-bodied, aromas of cranberry, red cherry and raspberry entwined with thyme, basil, black pepper, cinnamon and dried hibiscus. Supple, velvety tannins lightly frame the creamy mouthfeel; lacy acidity embraces the delicate fruit and floral and lingers to a harmonious closing. An approachable expression exhibits poise and dainty aromatics. Match with pork or poultry over the next 3 years. Fermented to 14% alc."
