Gold Medal – Marlborough Wine Show 2024
Long time Marlborough farmers, the Jones family have three vineyards from which they source fruit for their Starborough label as well as growing fruit for other notable labels. With Two Rivers winemaker Dave Clouston making the wines they seem to be on a winning formula having picked up multiple Gold Medals for previous vintages. It's vibrant and intense, full of lush tropical fruits with underlying herbs and a streak of salinity. Starborough could well be the Star Sauvignon of the vintage.
Winery notes (2024 Vintage)
"A refreshing wine bursting with aromas of pungent passionfruit and tropical fruits with fresh herb and lime notes. The bright pristine palate is filled with juicy, powerful passionfruit and tropical fruit flavours. This is a concentrated rich wine finishing long with fresh mouthwatering acidity."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, October 2024 (2024 Vintage)
"It's fabulously aromatic on the nose, showing Granny Smith apple, lemon zest, apricot and green rockmelon characters, leading to a succulent palate offering excellent vibrancy and persistency. Upfront and flavoursome, making it highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2027."
93/100 Erin Larkin, RobertParker.com, Wine Advocate, December 2024 (2024 Vintage)
"The 2024 Sons of the Soil Sauvignon Blanc is sweaty and pungently intense on the nose, with white cabbage, soy-soaked enoki mushroom, kiwi fruit and guava, mustard seeds and celery. In the mouth, the wine is all passion fruit and remarkably intense fruit. It's a powerhouse. I'd probably enjoy a little more restraint, but the intensity and drive of this wine are quite astonishing and will impress many. I am finding myself reaching for descriptors here that I would also apply to things like Barossa Valley Shiraz: palate-staining, ultra intense, powerful. This is quite exciting and certainly impactful."
Rated Excellent & 93+/100 Cameron Douglas MS, December 2024 (2024 Vintage)
"Potent bouquet and palate with aromas and flavours of fresh peach and lemon, apple and tropical passionfruit. Vibrant and fresh on the palate with a quiver in the acidity leading to a delicious mouthfeel and finish. Balanced and well made in a just dry expression with best drinking from 2024 through 20207."
Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com, December 2024 (2024 Vintage)
"Passion fruit and gooseberry with a green vegetal scent. Pleasingly dry despite the ripeness of the fruit. Very high-intensity flavour with lots of persistence. Ticks every box for the style."
