Gold Medal – Great Australian Shiraz Challenge 2024
Named after St Hallett stalwart, Stuart Blackwell, this reserve Shiraz, is big and bold. It exudes all the power and brooding density that the Barossa has to offer.
Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"On the nose, blackberry tart, lashings of berry coulis, fine cocoa and sweet spice elevate from the glass. Intense flavours of blackberry and mulberry are complemented by waves of milk chocolate and sweet baking spice flow across the palate. The supple tannins are well polished, persistent and complemented by the well-balanced oak. This full-bodied, rich and opulent wine is perfectly structured to ensure the wine will age gracefully throughout the years.
Blackwell Shiraz is predominately sourced from the Northern Barossa. Individual parcels are harvested and treated as single batches in the winery. The fruit was destemmed and transferred to various sized fermenters based on the batch size. After pressing, the parcels were filled to American oak barrels, where they matured for 12-16 months."
5 Stars & 96/100 Huon Hooke, The Real Review (2021 Vintage)
"Very deep, bright, saturated purple colour with aromas of tar/graphite, ironstone and smoky oak, the oak well balanced and the tannins firm and coating and long. A solid, powerful yet elegant shiraz with great cellaring potential which can also be enjoyed now. Drink: 2023–2038."
95/100 Dave Brookes, James Halliday's Wine Companion (2021 Vintage)
"Super-deep crimson in the glass with inviting aromas of macerated plum, blackberry, boysenberry and blueberry fruits. Hints of fruit cake spice, licorice, dark chocolate, turned earth, violets, olive tapenade, vanillin oak panforte and roasting meats. It's a classic Barossan style and one that St Hallett does very well, consistently dealing out great examples of what made the region famous across the world. Plush and endearing with superfine powdery tannins and a black-fruited finish that lingers nicely, showing abundant spice and meaty, earthy nuance. You can see why these wines are so well supported, especially so from a vintage as strong as 2021. Drink by 2038."
5 Stars & 95/100 Aaron Brasher, The Real Review (2021 vintage)
"Dark, inky and youthful in the glass. Heady aromas of plum conserve, coffee grounds, sweet spice, licorice and oak. Full throttle flavour, big, bold and beautifully Barossa. Opulent, with a core of dark fruit, spice and oak along with grippy, textured tannins and lively acidity. There's lashings of flavour here, but also balance and drinkability. Drink: 2023–2038."
94/100 Ken Gargett, WinePilot.com, September 2022 (2021 Vintage)
"Stuart Blackwell is one of the Barossa’s most popular winemakers and has been seen as the face of St Hallett for decades. This is a worthy tribute to him. The grapes here hail from the sub-regions of the northern Barossa, Ebenezer, Greenock and Moppa Hills. An opaque magenta, there is some oak evident here but it is masterfully handled. Rich, ripe and just delicious, the nose offers aromas swirling through cassis, blackberries, vanilla, cold tea, delicatessen meats, licorice and coffee grinds. The wine has fine acidity, impressive length and sleek tannins, though overall, is a savoury style. Enjoy this any time over the next twelve to fifteen years. Love it."
94/100 Tom Kilne, WinePilot.com, October 2022 (2021 Vintage)
"Coal, blackberry and black cherry to start. Nutmeg, earthy root vegetables, game meat, cut leather, cacao nib and smoke to follow along with some lovely graphite minerality bringing lift and class. Nice complexity and savoury/fruit mix aromatically. The palate is full bodied but lifted, with notes akin to the nose gliding through the mouth led by blackberry and black cherry again with coal, mocha and cacao nib notes in support. Bitter mocha-drenched tannins frame to a long finish. While this is dark fruited, there’s no descension into weightiness. There’s lift and balance, glide and motion. A lovely example of boldness and concentration kept elevated and poised. Nicely done."
