This Hawkes Bay producer excels with Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough. Every year their Straits Grand Reserve is well received and highly awarded. The 2019 is only recently released and once again shows its might with intense Marlborough characters, fantastic fruit weight and great balance and length.
Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"The Straits Sauvignon Blanc is grown across a variety of soil types in Marlborough. Gravels provide tropical flavours, clay loams produce citrus notes and deep silty soils lift the aromatic quality. The best parcels are selected for this wine and harvested only when fully ripe.
Fruit for this reserve wine is destemmed and gently pressed, then cool fermented in stainless steel tanks to retain the pure fruit flavours. After ferment the wine was left for a period on yeast lees to develop texture and complexity.
An elegant wine with ripe tropical and passion fruit aromas. The beautifully balanced palate leads to a fresh lingering finish. Delicious with fresh fish or lightly spiced Asian cuisine."
Top 20 New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs; 92/100 Decanter (UK)
"Named after the Sileni who were the hedonistic companions of Dionysus, the Greek God of wine, this is an equally exuberant Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc (once the shy, youthful nose opens in the glass) boasting lush mango, white peach and tangy herbaceous flavours. The best parcels of grapes from vineyards on gravel, loam and silt soils were used, and it spends time on lees for added complexity, the yeasty creaminess not masking the mouthwateringly fresh acidity. Top value!"
4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper (2019 Vintage)
"Full of youthful impact, the intensely varietal 2019 vintage was fermented and lees-aged in tanks. Bright, light lemon/green, it is highly aromatic, with good body and vibrant, concentrated herbaceous and tropical fruit flavours, dry (2.9 grams/litre residual sugar) and crisp."

5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2018 (2018 Vintage)
"The wine offers terrific fruit power and purity; the instantly appealing bouquet shows passionfruit, feijoa, green rockmelon and lemon peel aromas, leading to a succulent palate that is vibrant and mouth-wateringly delicious. It is filled with classic flavours backed by bright acidity, finishing impressively long and juicy. At its best: now to 2021."
4 ½ Stars & Top 10, Cuisine Sauvignon Blanc Tasting, December 2018 (2018 Vintage)
"A well-structured wine with ripe stone fruits, grapefruit and lifted orange zest. The palate has spice and texture with just a hint of sweetness."
