Here is a fantastic buy on this rare Italian wine. The importer has found themselves with excess stocks and needs it cleared from the warehouse, so out it goes at this excellent price. Snap this up, you'll be glad you did.
Gaglioppo (pronounced gal-YO-po) is a red-wine grape originating in Calabria, the “toe” of the Italian boot shape. It is an ancient grape, being first cited in early 1240. Modern DNA analyses imply that Gaglioppo is a descendant of the superb Sangiovese grape of Chianti but is also shares a lot of similarities with Aglianico and Nebbiolo.
This organic example from Scala is an outstanding representation of Gaglioppo highlighting why this variety is becoming sort after. As with this one, good examples have an appealing fragrance and perfume. The hallmark tannin content is there (lovers of Nebbiolo take note) but the wine retains lovely freshness with excellent fruit, a typical Italian “dusty” quality, and a whiff of roses. Fermented and aged in concrete vessels which retains the characteristic aromas and freshness of the fruit. A fresh, fragrant and fruity mouthful with vibrant energy. A great all-rounder, drink it alone or with pizza and pasta.
Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"Ciro Rosso “Etichetta Storica” by Scala is a rich, intense and warm Calabrian wine, vinified and aged in cement vats. The nose recalls the notes of Mediterranean scrub, followed by sensations of sweet spices, salty nuances and touches of withered violets. On the palate it has a structured and rich body, full and pleasant, with a good tannic grip and pleasant freshness."
