A serious Portuguese red that featured as one of Jancis Robinson's Wines of the Week. Quinta da Fonte Souto is a recent acquisition by the Symingtons. An organically managed estate, it continues their commitment to quality and low-intervention viticulture. Packed with complex dark fruits and food-friednly structure, the Fonte Souto is a seriously good red for the price.

"Lead grape Alicante Bouschet brings mulchy, autumnal savouriness – dried mint, radicchio, tobacco leaf and dried fig – to juicy blackberry and inky blackcurrant fruit striated with skeins of fine tannin. Compelling fruitiness, savouriness and acidity lend a counterpoint, with crushed rock, mineral notes and powdery tannins to bring tension and depth. Partially aged (50%) for six months in seasoned 400-litre French oak barrels. Elegant."

"Darker than the Florão just tasted – not surprising with so much Alicante Bouschet in the blend. Intense ripe but fresh and spicy fruit, both red and black and very open and expressive. Even so there is a more savoury character here too and this is more evident on the palate, which balances that ripe fresh fruit depth and gives it a more serious side. Dry length and finesse with fine-grained, dry tannin texture. Needs time. Sweet fruit and spice of Alicante Bouschet dominates the finish. The 207-hectare Quinta da Fonte Souto was acquired by the Symington family in 2017 and is their first vineyard outside the Douro. Lying on the slopes of the São Mamede Range at an elevation of 500 metres in the Alentejo subregion of Portalegre, the property benefits from cooler and wetter conditions than the hot Alentejo plain. Mature vines: 40% Alicante Bouschet, 25% Trincadeira, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah, 10% Alfrocheiro. 50% of the blend aged 6 months in second- and third-year 400-litre French oak barrels."

"The wine comes from an Alentejo estate acquired by the Douro's Symington family in 2017. It is a powerfully structured wine. The tannins and the rich black fruits are laced with refreshing acidity, a sign of the estate's 1,500-foot altitude. Drink this wine from 2021."
