Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"Golden Lemon hue with a slight unfiltered haze. Complex aromas of lemon grass, brioche, citrus fruit and hazelnuts. On the palate it is full and rich with great old vine density, almost a chewy texture. The fresh bright saline acidity tightens up the wine to give it drive and length. Another great example of North Canterbury Chardonnay.
Old vine Mendoza Chardonnay from Waipara Springs on Omihi clay soils, planted between 1982-1990. Dry farmed without synthetic chemicals or fertilisers. Hand picked and whole bunch pressed, transferred to barrels without settling. Wild ferment in French oak 28% new, and left on lees without sulphur for 12 months prior to being racked to tank in April 2024 to spend a second winter on light lees. Bottled unfined and unfiltered in August 2024."
5 Stars & 96/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, April 2025 (2023 Vintage)
"Immensely complex and inviting, the bouquet showcases nectarine, lemon peel, subtle vanilla, hazelnut, and savoury pastry aromas. The palate is equally satisfying with terrific concentration and silky flow, complemented by elegant texture and fine acidity. Superbly structured with impeccable balance, promising to evolve graciously. At its best: now to 2035."
Rated Outstanding & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, March 2025 (2023 Vintage)
"Youthful, varietal, waves of intensity showing ripe stone fruits then barrel spices, plenty of lees action then grapefruit, peach and red apple. Delicious on the palate with complex flavours and textures. Lemonade lemons and grapefruit, wild flowers and white soils peach and red apple flavours are framed polished tannins and a delicious saline and salivating acid line. Well made, lengthy and youthful. There’s some tautness as well an elegance inviting a glass pour immediately. Best from late 2025 through 2030+."

Pyramid Valley's story began in the slopes and soil of North Canterbury at Waikari Estate. In 2000, Mike & Claudia Elze Weersing applied their impressive array of knowledge in viticulture, oenology, and biodynamics to this plot of land.
Steve Smith and Brian Sheth took the reins in 2017 to continue the legacy of spectacular winemaking. Some of the world's most profound Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays have been produced at Waikari, its combination of fertile soil and high-altitude slopes constituting a unique terroir over 80 hectares of perfectly placed plantings.
In 2018 the scope of Pyramid Valley's wine environs expanded with the purchase of Manata Estate in Central Otago. This established (over 150 years) vineyard has bolstered the magnificent Pinot Noir offering of Pyramid Valley, due to soils of rare distinction - the result of careful culivation resulting in soils with high levels of organic matter and natural humus.
