Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"Deep crimson hue. Deep brooding nose of plum and blue fruits with lifted floral spicy notes. Full bodied Pinot Noir with ripe rich fruits, mouth filling texture and round plush tannins giving the wine weight and power that lingers on the palate with a savoury, moreish finish.
A blend of four vineyards in North Canterbury. The sites include the most northern vineyard on the Omihi Saddle planted on Omihi clay soils; 'Top Block' which is part of the “Golden Mile” on Blacks Ave in Waipara also planted on Omihi clay soils; Three Sisters Vineyard on Mackenzies Rd in Waipara, planted on Rangitata gravels; and The Porters families vineyard on Mackenzies Rd in Waipara, planted in 2004 on Domett Clay soils.
Hand-picked and fermented with natural vineyard yeasts in open top fermenters with 25% whole bunch. It was aged in French barrels, 20% new for 12 months before settling in stainless steel on light less for a further 6 months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered."
Rated Outstanding & 96/100 Cameron Douglas MS, September 2022 (2020 Vintage)
"There’s no mistaking the sense of place with aromas of white soil and wild flowers, the varietal signature of red berries with cherry and old strawberry sitting nicely alongside moments of plum then spice. Fine tannins and acidity salivate and coat the palate with texture and finesse while red fruits and wild flowers are at the core and mid-palate. Youthful and new, complex and varietal, a wine of place and time, complexity and charm. Best drinking from 2024 through 2034+."
95/100 Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous (2020 Vintage)
"The 2020 Pinot Noir North Canterbury evokes wild bilberry and red fruits with lifted wild herbs and marzipan. Elegant yet unrestrained in its wildness, light in body yet with excellent intensity. The tannins are fine-grained, mouthcoating and almost chalky; there's a sense of roundness from clay-rich soils while having focus. The wine is a selection of two vineyards from the Waipara slopes on clay-loam and another two on the more alluvial sites, including the old Bellbird Springs winery."
94/100 James Suckling (2020 Vintage)
"A perfumed nose of rooibos tea, crushed strawberries, rose petal, grated nutmeg and moss. Medium-bodied with silky tannins. Textural and vibrant with an array of floral notes that combine and add depth to red fruit, herbs and spice, culminating in an impressive finish. Long. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
