Winery notes (2024 Vintage)
"Golden lemon hue. Characters of nectarine, pear, ripe apples, Meyer lemon and a hint of shortbread. A lovely soft nutty texture that builds in richness before the unique saltiness found in all our Pyramid Valley Chardonnay comes through in the long, rice paper-like finish. Absolutely delicious.

A classic Hawke’s Bay vintage, with low rainfall through the spring and summer months, along with a modest diurnal shift from the onset of ripening. The higher elevation and cooler daily temperatures of Mangatahi retained beautiful acidity at harvest. Hand picked, whole bunch pressed. Wild ferment in a combination of Nico Velo concrete tulipes and seasoned oak, and aged on lees for 14 months. Bottled unfined."

5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, September 2025 (2024 Vintage)
"Elegant and gorgeously complex, the wine shows ripe peach, rockmelon, oatmeal, nougat, and savoury pastry nuances on the nose. The palate is focused and flowing, with a refined texture, backed by beautifully pitched acidity, and finishes impressively long and expansive. The wine highlights the texture and mouthfeel, making it alluring and seductive. At its best: now to 2034."

Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, October 2025 (2024 Vintage)
"An enticing bouquet of fruit purity and finesse, aroma sand flavours of crumbled stone and leesy complexities followed by fruit flavours of red apple and some peach. A wine of texture and freshness on the palate, no oak, so the purity of fruit and style must speak volumes, and they do. On the third and fourth taste the textures of fruit tannins begin to add volume to the palate. A wine I feel can develop some more with best drinking from late 2026 through 2029, perhaps longer. Chablisien in nature, a wine perfect for an aperitif or with delicate seafood dishes."

5 Stars & 18.5+/20 (94) Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Reviews, October 2025 (2024 Vintage)
"Bright, even, pale yellow. The nose is lifted, with aromas of grenola, stonefruit and almond shavings. Medium-full bodied, aromas of apricot intermixed with lemon and grapefruit zest, alongside almond shavings, grenola and delicate spice. The pristine fruit shows depth, reflecting a subtle gernola note, and citrus zest adds interest. A mineral-textured palate enriches, lending an elegant, sustained finish. A harmonious Chardonnay with purity and refined features. Match with butter-poached langoustine and butterfish over the next 6-8 years. Fruit from Two Terraces Vineyard in Mangatahi, handpicked, fermented with wild yeasts, then aged for 12 months in concrete tulipes, unfined. 14% alc."

Pyramid Valley's story began in the slopes and soil of North Canterbury at Waikari Estate. In 2000, Mike & Claudia Elze Weersing applied their impressive array of knowledge in viticulture, oenology, and biodynamics to this plot of land.

Steve Smith and Brian Sheth took the reins in 2017 to continue the legacy of spectacular winemaking. Some of the world's most profound Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays have been produced at Waikari, its combination of fertile soil and high-altitude slopes constituting a unique terroir over 80 hectares of perfectly placed plantings.

In 2018 the scope of Pyramid Valley's wine environs expanded with the purchase of Manata Estate in Central Otago. This established (over 150 years) vineyard has bolstered the magnificent Pinot Noir offering of Pyramid Valley, due to soils of rare distinction - the result of careful culivation resulting in soils with high levels of organic matter and natural humus.
