Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"Green lemon hue. A complex nose of minerals, flint, lemons, and limes. The palate is taut yet rich, with concentrated flavors reminiscent of lime and samphire. Fine, compact phenolics frame the wine and drive a long, mineral finish. This wine always reminds me of line and length—like train tracks stretching into the distance.
Planted between 2000-2002 at 11,111 vines/ha and a second planting in 2018, farmed biodynamically from inception. This unique, south-east facing site has varied soils, graduating from top to bottom on the slope, through primarily shallow (10-15cm) glauconitic clays over well drained limestone.
Crushed and soaked for 4 hours prior to pressing. Wild ferment, in aged French oak barrels. 12 months on lees in barrel, then aged on light lees for 5 months in stainless steel prior to bottling unfined and unfiltered in September 2023."
96/100 Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, September 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"Expansive, succulent white of depth and concentration with pretty lift and complexity from jasmine florals, warm straw, hazelnut and button mushroom savouriness amongst the mandarin, ginger, lime, green apple going on. The supple flow stretches luxuriously through the palate and finishes with a light, building chalky pucker. It’s such a chilled out white, but so much is going on. And gosh it drinks beautifully."
95/100 Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous, April 2024 (2022 Vintage)
"If the Field of Fire were a person, it wouldn't suffer fools gladly. The 2022 Chardonnay is a concentrated, direct and firm wine that knows where it's going and does so with a firm grip on your mouth. Focused, full of drive, it has sinew and sapidity. It is richly fruited – reminiscent of apricots alongside juicy lemon as well as toasted pine nuts, oats and flint. However, its quality is not in its flavors but its texture and power. Where I'm from, we say, 'Shy brains got nowt' and this isn't shy."

Pyramid Valley's story began in the slopes and soil of North Canterbury at Waikari Estate. In 2000, Mike & Claudia Elze Weersing applied their impressive array of knowledge in viticulture, oenology, and biodynamics to this plot of land.
Steve Smith and Brian Sheth took the reins in 2017 to continue the legacy of spectacular winemaking. Some of the world's most profound Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays have been produced at Waikari, its combination of fertile soil and high-altitude slopes constituting a unique terroir over 80 hectares of perfectly placed plantings.
In 2018 the scope of Pyramid Valley's wine environs expanded with the purchase of Manata Estate in Central Otago. This established (over 150 years) vineyard has bolstered the magnificent Pinot Noir offering of Pyramid Valley, due to soils of rare distinction - the result of careful culivation resulting in soils with high levels of organic matter and natural humus.
