Poggio Anima Samael is 100% Montepulciano from a single site in Chieti, Abruzzo.
The reinforcements have arrived! We've been waiting for the arrival of this new vintage as the previous vintage proved very popular and sold out quickly. Offering plenty of drinkability, in a way that only the Italians seem to manage, this offers something different to have with your next hearty meal, be it pizza, pasta or anything else the Italians seem to have mastered! And whilst you're enjoying the meal be sure to check out the labels, these wines attract as much attention for what's on the label as what's in the bottle.
Winery notes (2018 Vintage)
"In Jewish texts, Samael is better known as the ‘Angel of Death.’ It is believed that Samael is both good and evil in that he does the work of God but desires man to do evil. Samael is viewed as a seducer as was first spoken of in the Talmud as assuming the role of the serpent and tempting Eve in the Garden of Eden.
The correlation here is that Montepulciano can be a very alluring and seductive grape that lends itself to pleasurable drinking. That said, often time Montepulciano is simple, thin and insipid. It is both good and bad.
This is 100% Montepulciano comes from an organically farmed single vineyard in Chieti located less than half a mile from the Adriatic Sea. The wine has a lovely purple colour to it and a violet hue, with ripe plum and blackberry aromas. In the mouth the black fruit is joined by some darker chocolate notes and a hint of spice. This is smooth and drinkable, great value for drinking now but enough grip to lay down for a couple of years."
Reviews for the 2017 vintage below…
5 Stars & 93/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, November 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"Gorgeously fruited and beautifully fragrant, the bouquet shows black/blueberry, spiced cherry, mixed spice and toasted almond characters. The palate is succulent and wonderfully weighted, displaying fleshy mouthfeel and silky texture, leading to a lingering juicy finish. This is modern, vibrant and expressive, offering terrific drinking. At its best: now to 2021."
5 Stars & 18.5/20 (93) Raymond Chan, November 2018 (2017 Vintage)
"Full, near impenetrable, black-red colour with slight purple hues on the rim, very youthful in appearance. The nose is softly full and gently deep and well-packed with aromas of ripe blackberry fruit along with boysenberries and black plums, unfolding some jam notes, and black mineral elements. Medium-full bodied, the palate is rich and succulently sweet with ripe fruit flavours of blackberries, boysenberries and black plums, with enriching jam notes unfolding subtle herb, earth and mineral interest. The fruit sweetness is abundant and underlined by fine, grainy tannin structure lending supple grip and textures. The wine carries smoothly to a plush and juicy, bold-fruited finish. This is a succulently rich and ripe Montepulciano with plush, ripe blackberry, boysenberry and plum flavours with subtle mineral interest on a supple palate. Match with barbecued and grilled red meats over the next 3+ years. Hand-picked fruit, 100% Montepulciano from Chieti, vines 24 y.o., fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine spending a week on skins post ferment and aged 6 months in seasoned French oak. 7,000 cases made."
92/100 Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, April 2019 (2017 Vintage)
"A collaboration between Tuscany producer Riccardo Campinoti of Le Ragnaie and Ronnie Sanders, the USA wine importer who notably specialises in Australian boutique wine producers. Samael of course the Angel of Death, montepulciano of course the red grape of Abruzzo and not much to do with Talmudic scripts or deities. This is a ripper drink, and at a good price.
Mixed forest berry scents, dusting of spice, dark chocolate faintly, some woody-clove going on. A really nice bouquet, seems generous from the start. Fleshy yet fresh feeling in the palate, mixed berry flavours, tart but refreshing acidity, a lick of green herb, spice, a light chew of tannins to close. Ticks lots of boxes for a more vibrant expression of the variety."
