Winery notes (2020 Vintage)
"Nautilus Clay Hills Vineyard is located on the ridge that divides the Brancott and Omaka Valleys within the Southern Valleys sub region of Marlborough. The vineyard is divided into 6 discrete blocks with differing aspects and slopes and an elevation between 100 and 130m. Normally picked midway through the Pinot Noir harvest window this vineyard has rapidly become the cornerstone block for Nautilus Pinot Noir where the clay based soils contribute a silken texture and fine grained tannins.

This wine has aromas of pomegranate, ripe blackberries, warming spices and savoury notes. The mid-palate shows fruit sweetness, while generous but fine-grained tannins contribute to a lingering elegant finish.

The fruit was hand-picked and chilled overnight before de-stemming in to 3 small tanks incorporating (0.5 to 100%) whole bunch components. After a 5 – 9 day cold soak the wine completed a spontaneous fermentation and remained on skins for an average of 20 days before pressing. After 24 hours settling, the wine was racked to 228L French Oak barriques (30% new) and matured for 11 months before clarification and bottling in February 2021."

5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, January 2024 (2020 Vintage)
"Floral, fragrant wine with juicy acidity that seems to activate the wine’s delicious mix of fruit and floral flavours. Delicate yet with impressive underlying power and a ‘hands-off’ seductively silken texture. Accessible wine with moderate cellaring potential."

Rated Excellent & 94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, May 2024 (2020 Vintage)
"Earthy and mineral, complex and varietal bouquet. Aromas and flavours of clay and stone, soft dried herb qualities and a core of red berry and cherry fruits. The oak has a bold statement to make accentuated by the tannins and acid line, just needs some more cellar time to settle in and develop more. A dry wine with a whisper of gun flint, then baking spice and some earth smoke qualities. As the wine opens out in glass these flavours and texture begin to meld more. Lengthy finish, complex and offers best drinking from late 2025 through 2033."

94/100 JamesSuckling.com, November 2023 (2020 Vintage)
"Perfumed and lovely strawberry aromas with some pie crust and lilac undertones. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a savoury finish. Orange peel undertones. Hints of cedar. Sustainable."

4 ½ Stars Michael Cooper, October 2023 (2020 Vintage)
"The 2020 vintage is a single-vineyard red, grown in the Southern Valleys and matured in French oak casks. Ruby hued, it is fragrant and savoury, with very good depth of delicate cherry, plum and spice flavours, seasoned with nutty oak, and supple tannins. A refined, gentle wine, it should be at its best 2025+."

Nautilus Estate's dedicated and forward-thinking team of viticulturists and winemakers have a very particular approach to their craft: they carefully blend various fruit parcels to create wines with intricate layers of complexity and put a special emphasis on enhancing their texture and mouthfeel. To achieve this, they are equipped with state-of-the-art, albeit small-scale, winemaking facilities that provide the necessary tools and precision.

While Nautilus wines are certainly enjoyable on their own, their true potential shines when paired with delectable cuisine. Winemaker Clive Jones places a significant emphasis on crafting wines that harmonise seamlessly with food, making it one of Nautilus' core philosophies.

At Nautilus, simplicity is a guiding principle, reflected in a small friendly team. A smaller team size allows each member to be fully engaged in the winemaking process from start to finish. It also affords Clive, the winemaker, the opportunity to dedicate his time to the art of winemaking rather than the management of a large workforce. It's an intentionally hands-on approach!

Excellent winery facilities grant Nautilus Estate the freedom to harvest grapes at their peak ripeness rather than being constrained by logistical considerations. This level of control extends to aspects such as the degree of extraction – the color and flavour – obtained from the grape skins.

Being a family-owned vineyard, they have the privilege of drawing upon generations of experience in the ever-evolving world of wine production. Owner, Robert Hill Smith, represents their fifth generation of family vintners, a lineage underscoring a commitment to a cautious, long-term approach. Changes are only implemented if they enhance the quality of their wines.

Nautilus invites you to savour a relaxed and informal wine tasting experience at their beautifully renovated cellar door tasting bar. Here, Guests have the chance to sample wines from their current selection and fully appreciate the fruits of Nautilus Estate's labours of love.
