By now, many of you will have heard about the news about Millton Winery shutting up shop and as a result the wines are being cleared to market. We have received our allocation of these wines and now is your chance to grab a slice of history before it is gone.
It was with much sadness that we learnt of the passing of one of Marlborough’s foremost winemakers, James Healy, last week. Moving to Marlborough in 1991 and teaming up with Kevin Judd and Ivan Sutherland at Cloudy Bay, James had an immediate impact, introducing wild Chardonnay ferments. This extended to Sauvignon Blanc and the creation of the now infamous Te Koko. James was always keen to explore the boundaries.
In 2004, James and Ivan created Dog Point wines and his influence on the winemaking of these wines was always evident. Part of his recent retirement plans was a shift to Nelson to be closer to his daughter Sophie and son-in-law Mark helping with their Abel wines and cider project.
His love of the wines of Burgundy, paired with great food, plenty of laughter and stories will be well remembered.
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"A haunting wine with bristling delicacy, buoyed by a noted mineral edge. Poached pear and warm croissant give a spiced and sappy appeal. We consider the aromatic delight of Viognier will enhance and partner foods high in Umami flavours. Drink now through to 2027 with happiness."
Reviews for the 2021 vintage below…
Rated Outstanding & 95/100 Cameron Douglas MS, June 2024 (2021 Vintage)
"A bouquet of place and complexity, purity and ripeness, personality and style. Aromas, flavours and textures of apricots and white peach, lees and flowers, some baked goods and clay soil mineral qualities. The combination of acidity and core fruit flavours combined with textures from lees and natural fermentation highlights a wine of deliciousness and complexity. Best drinking from 2024 through 2028."
92/100 Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, September 2025 (2021 Vintage)
"It’s dictionary definition stuff. Rich apricot, lush peach, some dried pawpaw, ginger, a pad of honey-butter. Very intense, quite cloying but seems to have a rod of talc-meets-pink grapefruit coolness at its core. A little pleasing herbal bitterness with toasted almonds to finish. Quintessential, as has been said, so there’s that, but it is a lot in its style."
