It is a great time to be a Pinot Noir lover as we are continuing to see some smart deals on the market. A Central Otago Pinot Noir, as good as this, for just $20, is too good to ignore.
"Aptly named Bespoke, this range is produced in small-parcel lots – whether unconventional in varietal composition or style, nostalgic in nature, or a unique one-off."
In this case, winemaker Paul Darwick was given the opportunity to work with a parcel of Central Otago Pinot Noir fruit. Great idea, but Central Otago Pinot Noir from a Hawkes Bay producer doesn't always resonate with consumers; no matter how good. Hence the deal!
This is a premium Pinot Noir from low yielding vines with winemaking to reflect its expected price including 12 months in quality French, 35% new oak.
Bright, expressive and immediately appealing, it delivers all the hallmarks you want from Central Otago Pinot. Think ripe cherry and plum, a touch of wild herb, and a silky, flowing texture that makes it dangerously easy to enjoy. It’s polished without being overworked, with just enough structure to keep things interesting from first sip to last.
This is one of those under the radar finds that seriously overdelivers in the glass, well worth snapping up while it’s here.
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"Delightfully approachable, yet complex, this full-bodied Pinot Noir exudes dark cherry and plum aromas. Rich in boysenberry and plum flavours, complimented with harmonious savoury notes, refined tannins and deft oak all complete a mouth-filling and lingering finish. This wine will reward further cellaring.
The grapes for this generous wine were grown in the Central Otago region, on low yielding vines. After a long hot summer and the vines in perfect health the grapes were picked at ideal ripeness and flavour profile.
The grapes were gently crushed and allowed to cold soak for 3 days to extract important colour and flavour components. Fermentation proceeded with light plunging for further colour, flavour and fine tannin extraction. After a 10 day post ferment skin contact regime, the resulting wine was then sent to barrel for twelve months ageing in quality French oak (35% new wood) to enhance its natural structure. The wine is un-fined to preserve the natural structure but cross flow filtered prior to bottling on 12th October 2023 under screwcap closure."
Rated Excellent & 94/100 Cameron Douglas MS, February 2025 (2022 Vintage)
"All the hallmarks of Central Otago Pinot Noir are immediately recognisable with a savoury dried herb complexity framing aromas of black currant and plum then dark cherry and mineral-earth-smoke scents. Sand and schist, nettles and dark red berry fruits all align. Firm tannins with plenty of polish, medium+ acidity, very good length and style, well made with best drinking from late 2025 through 2032."
