Matawhero is one of Gisborne's pioneer wineries, now operated by the Searle Family. The grapes are grown on the iconic Briant vineyard in the Patutahi region just across the river from Matawhero where Chenin Blanc seems to thrive. We just love the spicy, honeysuckle flavours and freshness of the wine. Enjoy with or without food.
Winery notes (2025 Vintage)
"This gorgeous French variety grows well in our Gisborne climate. Aromas of citrus blossom, floral and orange zest notes. The palate shows lime, stone fruit and honeysuckle flavours with nice acidity and a creamy texture.
The grapes for this wine were sourced from the Briant's vineyard in the Patutahi region just across the river from Matawhero. The Chenin Blanc grapes are grown on Kaiti clay soil and with the vines being young, we only had two canes laid down for the growing season. This resulted in low yields and ensured early ripening with nice ripe flavours."
5 Stars & 95/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, February 2026 (2025 Vintage)
"Gorgeously styled and expressed, it's beautifully fruited and elegantly expressed on the nose, showing golden apple, rockmelon, fig, and lemon zest aromas. The palate delivers succulent fruit intensity, fleshy texture, and finely pitched acidity, finishing persistent and mouthwatering. At its best: now to 2031. "
Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, February 2026 (2025 Vintage)
"An excellent expression showcasing the voice of Matawhero’s style of power and purity of fruit whilst speaking flavours of crisp red and sore apples, pear and a fine leesy citrus layer. High acidity frames the core flavours of tree fruit and lees leading to a mineral quality. Taut and just dry on the finish with a tickle of residual sweetness offering contrast. Best drinking from late 2026 through 2032+."
