Matawhero is one of Gisborne's pioneer wineries, now operated by the Searle Family. The grapes are grown on the iconic Briant vineyard in the Patutahi region just across the river from Matawhero where Chenin Blanc seems to thrive. We just love the spicy, honeysuckle flavours and freshness on the wine. Enjoy with or without food.
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"This gorgeous French Variety grows well in our Gisborne climate. The grapes for this wine were sourced from the Briant's vineyard in the Patutahi region just across the river from Matawhero. The Chenin Blanc grapes are grown on Kaiti clay soil and with the vines being young, we only had two canes laid down for the growing season. This resulted in low yields and ensured early ripening with nice ripe flavours.
This gorgeous French variety grows well in our Gisborne climate. Aromas of citrus blossom, floral and orange zest notes. The palate shows lime, stone fruit and honeysuckle flavours with nice acidity and a creamy texture."
5 Stars & 94/100 Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, July 2023 (2022 Vintage)
"Varietally pure and elegantly complex, the bouquet shows golden apple, apricot, fig and floral aromas with a hint of spicy overtone. The palate delivers excellent weight and fruit richness, while remaining structured and poised. Beautifully textured and lingering with delectable flavours. At its best: now to 2030."
Rated Excellent & 93/100 Cameron Douglas MS, July 2023 (2022 Vintage)
"Clean, precise, fruity and varietal with a bouquet and palate of fresh and baked apple, moments of wet wool then flowers and a flinty mineral and clay quality. Lovely polish and silky texture as the wine touches the palate then flavours of apples and citrus emerge along with a flint and soil complexity. Balanced and well made with a lengthy juicy finish. Best drinking from 2023 through 2030."
