Main Divide is a well known North Canterbury label from the Donaldson Family (Pegasus Bay) that continues to offer some of the best value Pinot Noir around.
Winery notes (2019 Vintage)
"Unsettled weather over flowering resulted in a lighter than average set, meaning that no further fruit thinning was necessary. A classic North Canterbury summer then enabled this smaller crop to ripen beautifully. Accelerated maturation allowed harvest to take place slightly earlier than usual, and favourable autumn weather ensured the grapes were picked in perfect condition.
Upon release it is deep ruby in colour. A complex patchwork of both red fruit and savoury aromas unfurl from the glass, with raspberry, cherry, and pomegranate soon giving way to mushroom, leather, vanilla and baking spice. Generous fruit weight is backed by bright acidity and silky tannins that rapidly expand in the mouth. This gives the wine a pleasing tension that excites the palate, creating length and setting up for a rewarding finish."
5 Stars & 18.5/20 (93) Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, August 2021 (2019 Vintage)
"Moderately deep ruby-red, lighter edged. The nose is gently full, penetrating nuances of pepper berries, cherries and strawberries interweave cinnamon, dark herbs and an earthy underlay. Medium-full bodied, the richness of earth and barrel spices filled the palate, entwined with cherries, black raspberries and savoury mushrooms. The palate has weight and depth of savoury details, fine-grained tannin compliments and left a velvety mouthfeel. Herbs linger on the
closing. This is a brilliant value Pinot Noir with North Canterbury essence, rich and savoury on a silky broad palate."
92/100 Cameron Douglas MS, August 2021 (2019 Vintage)
"Aromas of dark berries toasty brown spices of oak. Flavours on the palate of dark cherries and plums, some black currant then vanilla and nut. Fine tannins with a mild chalky texture, a balanced and refined palate with fruit flavours that reflect the bouquet, contrasting acid line and lengthy satisfying finish. Best drinking from day of purchase and through 2025+."
90/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, Augsut 2021 (2019 Vintage)
"Fragrant pinot noir with floral, violet, dark cherry, mixed spice and nutty oak flavours supported by fine, peppery tannins. An appealing wine offering good value at this price."
