Double Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show 2023
Adelaide Hills S.A. Longview’s Shiraz Barbera takes the best of Australia and Italy and blends them together to create a harmonious, modern food wine. The Shiraz has all the hallmarks of cool-climate fruit —spicy, savoury with crunchy berries. The Barbera provides a juicy, cherry-like brightness and taut acid backbone that gives the wine wonderful structure.
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"Blackberry. Cherry. Pepper. Bright. Juicy. Savoury.
Longview’s Shiraz Barbera takes the best of Australia and Italy and blends them together to create a harmonious, modern food wine. The Shiraz has all the hallmarks of cool-climate fruit —white pepper and baking spices with slight undertones of vanilla and cocoa – and the Barbera adds pop with fresh blackberry lift. The palate is juicy to start with a burst of redcherry brightness courtesy of the Barbera, then gives way to a Shiraz savouriness and taut acid backbone that gives the wine wonderful structure. It is a fresh, lean wine right now but as we see with this unique blend, develops into a generous crowd pleaser.
A near-perfect Hills vintage for 2022 with excellent rainfall in Spring and any summer showers dispersed by subsequent mild breezes. The winds prevented any disease pressure and the mild Spring provided good conditions for flowering early. Cooler temperatures prevailed throughout and as yield was above average, increased wire-lifting and leaf-plucking were implemented, exposing the fruit zone to enhance ripening. From veraison through to harvest, the vineyard experienced below average, yet relatively dry temps, ensuring a very long ripening period resulting in exceptionally complex fruit flavour. Slow, even sugar development and excellent acid retention were welcome outcomes for the fruit and total harvest was completed on 28 April."

"For this release, the two varieties were co-fermented. Normally this does not happen, or at least not so effortlessly, but the grapes all ripened at the same time, making it possible. The wine is a blend of 73% Shiraz and 23% Barbera. A cool fermentation takes place in open tanks for eleven days, before maturation in old French hogsheads and puncheons for eight months. This is the best ‘Vista’ I can recall. A vibrant magenta, this is quite rich and even a little bit thrilling on the nose. Chocolate, leather, cloves and plums, there is good direction and excellent length. Focused and taut, while maintaining intensity, the wine has very fine tannins. Fresh and youthful, it should provide enjoyment over the next six to eight years. It drinks better than plenty of wines twice the price."

"Deep, dark colour; has that streak of black olive that is fully ripe, running through plum and blackberry, and paradoxically rounds out the finish. Drink: 2024 – 2032."

"The wines from the Saturno family's Longview range are invariably great value; offering interesting drinking at very fair prices. I was particularly taken by this unusual co-fermented blend of Aussie favourite shiraz (73%) with the Italian grape variety barbera (27%), which combine to produce a red that is fresh and approachable but also has some attractive savoury elements. This one is all about the hand-picked fruit, which has been matured briefly in older French oak hogsheads, adding some textural elements. The juicy and lively berry fruit makes this the perfect partner for a midweek spaghetti bolognaise, or Friday night pizza.

"Don’t hesitate. This is velvety, dry, rusty, meaty, floral; all those things. Smoky too, in a positive way. It’s underpinned by both sweet and sour cherry notes, along with peppercorn, and while it’s dry and well-shaped it’s more-ish to say the least. Great value drinking. Great style. Cusp of 92."
