Winery notes (2021 Vintage)
"Jackaman’s vineyard is Langmeil’s finest and rarest Cabernet Sauvignon, planted in the 1960s during the Cabernet revolution in the Barossa. This vineyard was lovingly tended by the colourful Barossan Arthur Jackaman, a World War II paratrooper, boxer and butcher who in retirement passed his small plot into Langmeil’s care. Cabernet increased dramatically in the 1950s and ‘60s bringing with it a new vision and direction for the Barossa. From its proud fortified wine heritage, it helped inspire the Barossa’s future as a premium dry red region.
The outstanding 2021 vintage is up there as one of my favourites. Sufficient winter rains revitalised the vines after two consecutive dry, frost-affected and low-yielding years. Spring was near perfect for budburst, flowering and fruit set, enabling vines to flourish and reach their full potential. Summer was gorgeous and mild with slow and even ripening, fantastic colour and flavour development, and acid retention. Finally, an unhurried harvest reduced pressure on fermenter space, cellar hands, and my sanity! As a result, we have captured the personality and quality of every vineyard
Lifted red and blackcurrant aromas entwine with cedary French oak, hints of savoury, black olive notes. Bright, juicy and rich blue fruits flow onto the palate which is medium to full-bodied. Briary spice, black olive and cedary hints add to the mix with a touch of new oak sweetness and silky tannins to add complexity to the youthful, fruity and velvety finish."
94/100 Dave Brooks, James Halliday's Wine Companion (2021 Vintage)
"Deep crimson in the glass with aromas of plush blackberry, dark plum and blackcurrant fruits along with hints of fine spice, cedar, licorice, tobacco leaf, dried herbs, violets, clove and vanillin oak. There is an impressive fruit density and flow to this release from the strong 2021 vintage. Fresh too, with a seam of acidity driving the pure fruit along, tannins chalky, fine and granitic, the wine retreating slowly with lovely ripe black fruits and spice."
92/100 Erin Larkin, RobertParker.com, Wine Advocate (2021 Vintage)
"The 2021 Jackaman's Cabernet Sauvignon is silkier and more polished than the Blacksmith Cabernet tasted alongside it, and this here leads with blackberry and raspberry jam, resinous oak, dried herbs, tobacco and dark chocolate. The wine is intense and gritty, dark and full-bodied. This is a big wine, but it does achieve balance within the infinite folds of flavour. It's very good, and as a red wine, it's very good indeed, but the density and breadth of the wine does steer it away from a more "classical" Cabernet experience."
