The Brajkovich family have carved out a reputation second to none for Chardonnay and every new release adds to that reputation.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate
"If you can taste history, duty, and family pride in a glass, it’s there in the Kumeu River Chardonnays… now producing some of New Zealand’s greatest Chardonnays, not to mention the world’s."
Winery notes (2023 Vintage)
"In 1990, Maté Brajkovich reworked the land and planted a new vineyard of Chardonnay vines on the site of the original vineyard that he and his family purchased in March 1944. The first grapes from this vineyard were harvested in March 1993, the year following Maté’s death. The resulting wine was released in November 1994 to coincide with celebrations marking the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Brajkovich Family’s arrival at Kumeu River."
Michael Brajkovich MW, Vintage notes (2023 Vintage)
"2023 rewarded our commitment and attention to detail with hand harvesting and triage in the vineyard. The result? All of the 2023 Single Vineyard wines have now been bottled, and are excellent examples of their respective and distinctive terroirs."
92/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, August 2023 (2023 Vintage)
"Lime marmalade, peach, almond, brioche, spice and mint tea. It’s kind of yellow tasting, for the synesthetes among us, and has a bright core of limey acidity, a fair bit of flint and grip, and while maybe the fruit is a little too juicy and tropical, it does have tension and length of flavour, and something of an umami chicken stock flavour to close, and zest of citrus peel too. Good wine. Not quite your usual Maté’s in terms of intensity and power, and not so much in the way of struck match either, and something of a hessian character. Still, lots of character here."

Rated Outstanding & 98/100 Cameron Douglas MS, July 2023 (2022 Vintage)
"This wine celebrates the 30th vintage of Mate's wine. Purity and freshness, complexity and finesse. Floral and mineral, cashew and sweet spice moments. Complexities from on the palate with textures of acidity against the citrus fruit and sweet pith flavours, white fleshed fruits and a touch of grape fruit peel. Pure and silky, A fabulous wine, exciting and textured, lengthy and persistent. An exciting opportunity."
5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, July 2023 (2022 Vintage)
"Rich, slightly buttery chardonnay with nutty oak and yeast lees flavours together with a saline influence. Intense, appealing wine that is mellow and at the same time has a vibrant undercurrent. It would probably benefit from two to three years bottle age."
