A label that that is a bit of a 'blast from the past'. We often talk about Old School Chardonnay and here is one that fits that description perfectly. The Kim Crawford name is probably best known for its soaring popularity in the USA market. The winery however still produce a range of wines from "Small Parcels' of exceptional fruit – maybe made more for the winemakers than the marketeers or accountants as they certainly don't fit the usual commercial model.
The creamy, mealy bouquet of this wine is simply gorgeous and it has a lovely, rich, full-bodied palate full of beautifully honed toasty oak, melon and fleshy tropical fruit cream with the smoky/woodsmoke nuances in the wine quite mesmerising. Utterly seamless as it traverses the palate and the lingering deliciousness has suggestions of grilled peach and hokey pokey.
Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
"Each vintage we select small batches of exceptional grapes which we craft into our Small Parcels range. This Chardonnay reflects the elegant landscape surrounding our Hawkes Bay vineyards as well as the complexity of the wild fermentation method.
Stonefruit and citrus aromas are enhanced by baking spice and brioche from regular battonage in fine French oak barriques. Concentrated, taut and minerally with a silken texture."
92/100 Cameron Douglas MS, February 2025 (2022 Vintage)
"There’s no mistaking the classic bouquet and palate of the example with aa rich and bold bouquet of peachy stone fruits, nectarine and banana, then vanilla and a cheesy cream filling. Full-bodied and dry with a frame of gentle cashew spice and lick of wood smoke and very fine tannins then flavours of stone and tree fruits. Balanced, well made and ready to drink from day of purchase through 2028+."
